Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a considerable debate over the growing population these days due which there is rising a major problem of accomodation in the metropolitan cities. Many people argue that best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. To some extent i agree with this statement as compact and huge apartments are one of the solutions to give shelter to people.

Firstly, significant increase in the population of world emerged as a major problem. Additionally, trend of shifting to major cities has been increased considerably because of better opportunities for career growth and excellent health facilities. Major industries, world-class universities and tertiary care hospitals are present in the major cities of the world. So, the citizens prefer to move in the big cities. Problems starts from here, when cities have become congested, they can not accomodate more people. For example, Karachi had a population 5 million in 1980, which increased significantly over three decades to 50 million. This is lead to deforestation of forests and increasing pollution of the city.

Building tall apartments is good solution to accomodate people, as less space is required to install tall buildings. Moreover, few square feet complexes can provide space to thousand of people. This is plan has been successfully implemnted in many cities like Mumbai and New york. Another solution is provision of facilities to the people in their small towns. If there are better job opportunities and good health system in smaller cities, people will prefer to stay in their home town.

In conclusion, constructing tall buildings to provide shelter is a good option but it can be seen as short term plan. Authorities should modernise the small cities and equip them with better facilities to stop relocation of population to the major cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree to some extent that tall apartment blocks can help, while also arguing that improving smaller towns can reduce pressure on cities. Both parts are relevant, and the examples of Mumbai and New York support the main proposal. This meets the task well, with some elements showing the fuller development expected at the next level. However, the discussion of the population increase and Karachi example is not clearly connected to why high-rise housing is the best response; the figures are also presented without explanation or support. Develop the comparison by explaining the benefits and limitations of apartment blocks, then show why investment in smaller cities is an additional rather than competing solution.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from urban population growth to high-rise housing and then to smaller-city development is generally understandable. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. At times, however, cohesion feels mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, the Karachi example moves from population growth to deforestation and pollution without explaining how these outcomes support the case for apartment blocks. “This is plan” also makes the reference difficult to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and explain the relationship between each example and the point it illustrates.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “population,” “congested,” “career growth,” “health facilities” and “relocation.” These choices make the subject clear, and some phrases show an attempt to use more formal language. However, inaccurate spelling, word forms and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the writing less natural: “accomodation,” “implemnted,” “trend … has been increased” and “provide space to thousand of people.” Some wording is also repetitive, particularly references to “major cities” and “people.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations and vary repeated terms. Proofreading spelling and checking whether a phrase is idiomatic would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because of better opportunities” and a relative clause in the Karachi example. The overall meaning is usually clear, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. For instance, “Problems starts” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “This is lead” uses an incorrect verb form; “the best way” also needs an article. Some sentences combine ideas in ways that make their grammatical relationships unclear. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb, and review articles and plural agreement. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the range you are already attempting.
