IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In large cities, the population is a lot and the residential areas have become very less due to increasing number of entertainment places, parks and other necessary places. People are suffering to find places to live or plots where they could create their own house. To overcome this space issue of residential areas, I agree with the idea of creating tall apartments so that they could provide homes to a lot of people while using less area of the land.
One tall apartment could provide homes to about 20-50 families depending upon its size. The cost of living in these flats would be less if compared to living in separate buildings, and it would provide families with better living conditions, especially in today's economy. There are many pros of living in tall apartments, for example, less area occupied, less rents, safer environment and many more.
On the other side, the only con that I see of a tall apartment is that it is vulnerable to earthquakes and other natural disasters. One natural disaster could destroy the whole building and ruin the lives of many families. This con could be prevented providing that the building is built with proper Standard Operating Procedures.
Overall, the idea is good to make a good use of the land, but it should be made sure that the apartment blocks are made with good materials, and are in residential areas. The goverment should try to ease these accomodation problems by building theses apartment blocks and providing relief to its people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you agree that tall apartment blocks can address housing pressure, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, including efficient land use, lower costs and safer living conditions, and you acknowledge earthquake risk. However, some points are asserted rather than explained. For example, the claim that flats offer “less rents” and “better living conditions” would be stronger with a brief explanation or a concrete example. The discussion of disaster risk is also narrow, and the final recommendation that blocks be placed in residential areas is not developed. To strengthen the response, explain how high-rise housing compares with alternatives and support the main benefits with specific evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present benefits and a drawback, and the conclusion restates your position. This makes the argument easy to follow. Some connections, however, are mechanical or imprecise. “On the other side” introduces a contrast, but “On the other hand” would be more natural; “Overall” then signals the conclusion appropriately. The second paragraph also lists several advantages without developing their relationship to the central argument, while the final paragraph introduces government action quite suddenly. Use clearer links between each claim and the housing shortage, and develop one or two advantages rather than relying on a list.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “residential areas,” “natural disasters,” “vulnerable” and “accommodation problems,” so the main ideas are communicated. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “the population is a lot,” “residential areas have become very less,” and “less rents” do not express the intended meanings idiomatically. There are also spelling errors in “goverment,” “accomodation” and “theses.” Aim for accurate collocations and more precise housing vocabulary, such as describing population as “large” or “growing” and rents as “lower.” Proofreading spelling would also improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “so that they could provide homes…” and “providing that the building is built…”. Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the population is a lot” lacks a suitable noun or adjective construction, and “due to increasing number” needs an article before “increasing number.” In “This con could be prevented providing that…,” the clause structure is awkward; a clearer form would be “This risk could be reduced if…”. There is also a run-on structure in the final sentence, where the government’s actions and the purpose could be linked more cleanly. Review articles, clause construction and sentence boundaries.
