Student answer (Band 6.0)

Providing adequate housing in major cities has become a significant challenge. Although building high-rise apartments can accommodate a large number of people in limited space, I do not believe it is the only or always the best solution.

Firstly, it can reduce pressure on land in densely populated cities. Since these buildings contain numerous flats on different floors, they can provide homes for hundreds of people without occupying large space. Moreover, the government should make these buildings near transport station and work place this would be convenient for the building residents as they will live close to their work place. Furthermore, this approach will leave land for other essential facilities like schools, hospitals, parks. Therefore, high-rise buildings can be an effective way to accommodate urban population.

However, completely relying on tall buildings is not the ultimate solution to accommodate urban population because it can put pressure on public facilities like lifts, parks, water supplies particularly when they are poorly planned. Moreover, building and maintaining these buildings are very expensive since everyone would not be able to afford it so it would be difficult to accommodate low-income families so there should be proper planning and alternate projects to manage people from low income families.

In conclusion, I partly agree that building high-rise apartment blocks is an effective way to use limited land and provide houses to accommodate people but it is not the only solution to rely on. However, the government should properly plan the construction of high-rise buildings and other housing schemes for low income families with proper planning and approach this problem could tackle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partly agree that high-rise apartments can help, but should not be the sole answer. You address both benefits and drawbacks, including efficient land use, access to work and transport, pressure on services, and affordability for low-income families. These are relevant points and support your response to the question. However, some are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that locating buildings near workplaces is convenient would be stronger with a specific illustration, and the affordability concern could explain what alternative housing schemes would achieve. Develop these points with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning and a concrete example to make the argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs present advantages and limitations, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. At times, though, linking is mechanical, and several ideas are crowded into long sentences. For instance, the sentence beginning “Moreover, the government should make these buildings near transport station” moves from location to convenience and then to land use without clear sentence boundaries. The conclusion also repeats “proper planning.” Use clearer transitions between distinct points, make references explicit, and divide complex ideas into manageable sentences to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “high-rise apartments,” “densely populated,” “public facilities,” and “low-income families,” which makes the main ideas clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “accommodate urban population” and “ultimate solution.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “transport station,” “work place,” and “manage people from low income families” do not sound natural in context, while “proper planning” is repeated. Aim for more precise housing and urban-planning language, and check common word partnerships. This would make your argument sound more fluent and controlled without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a concession in “Although building high-rise apartments can accommodate…” and a reason clause beginning “Since these buildings contain…”. The main meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors occur. For example, “the government should make these buildings near transport station and work place this would be convenient” joins independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. In “building and maintaining these buildings are very expensive,” the subject-verb agreement is faulty, and “it can put pressure” has an unclear singular reference to the buildings. Practise separating clauses, checking agreement, and using articles and plural forms consistently. Greater accuracy in these areas would strengthen your complex sentences.
