Student answer (Band 6.0)

In todays era, the best approach to provide accomodation to large number of people in big cities is to make tall apartments blocks. Many people argue that the most effective way to accomodate many people in small space is to bulid high rise buildings. The high rise buildings offer many benefits, there importance cannot be ignored. However, i don't agree this is the only way to give them a better life. A more balanced approach is to build both horizontal and vertical buildings to make it a more sustainable way.

On the one hand, the advantages of the vertical buildings are undeniable. These reduce the urban sprawl, that has a good impact on ecosystem overall. In addition, we don't need to clear our agriculture land to make colonies for the rising population. By making the high rise buildings in the city centeres, the distance between their offices and other places also reduce, thus reduce the dependence on fossil fuel. Thats a positive development in a society. For instance, in large metropolitan areas in Pakistan like Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. Accomodation and renting is so costly making it difficult for people of low economic background to survive in these large cities in search of better lifestyle.

On the other hand, many people still prefer to live in independent houses, as these give freedom, security and better life decisions. People can organize their living area, gardens according to their choice which is not possible in vertical buildings. Moreover, these buildings also require better managment and organization related to water, electricity and waste management. Poor management can create many issues for people living in them.

In conclusion, although high rise buildings is an effective way to accomodate people in densely populated areas. Its not the only and universal solution. A more practical way is to build both kinds of infrastructure and let the people choose according to their will. Thus, a more balanced and sustainable way to handle large number of population in big cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you recognise the benefits of high-rise housing but argue that it should be combined with other types of homes. You address both sides and give relevant reasons, including reduced urban sprawl, shorter journeys and the preference some people have for independent houses. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the reference to costly accommodation in Pakistani cities does not clearly show how building tall blocks would solve affordability, and the concerns about management could be linked more directly to whether high-rise housing is the best solution. Develop these examples and explain the trade-offs more precisely so that each main idea supports your answer to the question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present contrasting considerations, and the conclusion restates your balanced view. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This organisation is effective, and the progression is generally logical. To make the cohesion more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on these standard transitions and strengthen links between individual claims and their explanations. For instance, the sentence about expensive accommodation in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad follows the discussion of commuting, but its connection to that point is not made explicit. Some sentence boundaries and punctuation also interrupt the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “urban sprawl,” “agriculture land,” “fossil fuel,” “independent houses,” and “waste management.” These choices help communicate the main ideas about housing and city planning. However, spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural collocations are noticeable, such as “accomodation,” “bulid,” “high rise buildings,” and “better life decisions.” Some repetition of “buildings” and “people” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate spelling and more natural combinations, such as “high-rise apartment blocks,” “agricultural land,” and “make housing more affordable.” More precise vocabulary would make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including clauses with “although,” “as,” and “which,” and most of your meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “I don't agree this is the only way” needs a linking “that” or a different construction, while “the distance … also reduce” and “high rise buildings is” show subject–verb agreement problems. There are also sentence-boundary issues: “For instance, in large metropolitan areas in Pakistan like Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad” is a fragment, and “A more practical way…” in the conclusion is not a complete sentence. Check agreement, articles, and sentence completeness, and use punctuation to separate complete ideas.
