IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I quite agree with this statement. Large cities have a constantly evolving population. More and more people are moving to the big cities from the suburbs. A major reason is availability of jobs, better education and advanced healthcare.

It is difficult to provide housing for such a fast growing population without building tall apartment blocks. Moreover, most people now either live alone or live in nuclear families, hence big homes are not quite a requirement for them. Most times, people need a place to move in quickly. These apartment blocks make for the best option when people do not have enough time for a proper house to be made.

Last year, I moved to Dhaka from Sylhet, for my father's new job. We had a fairly short time on hand to house hunt and finalise one. A small 2 bedroom apartment were a life saver. It is easy to maintain as well considering our busy schedules.

In conclusion, in this modern world with a growing demand of housing in large cities, it might be a nice option or maybe even the only option to satisfy people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear from the opening—“I quite agree”—and you give relevant reasons, including urban population growth, access to jobs and services, and the convenience of apartments for smaller households. The Dhaka example also makes the response personal and relevant. However, the task is only partially addressed: the reasons are asserted more than explained, and the example mainly describes your family’s housing search rather than showing why tall blocks are the best way to provide enough homes across a city. You do not consider limitations or alternatives, and the conclusion is tentative (“might be a nice option or maybe even the only option”), which weakens the extent of your position. The response is also 64 words below the required minimum. Develop each reason with explanation or evidence and state your view more decisively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the general case, a personal example, and a conclusion. The progression from city growth to housing convenience and then to your experience is easy to follow. Basic linking is effective in places, particularly “Moreover” and “In conclusion.” To strengthen cohesion further, make the relationship between the example and the main argument more explicit: explain how your apartment illustrates the capacity or efficiency of tall buildings, not only the speed of finding a home. Some transitions are abrupt, and the conclusion introduces “the only option” without having established that claim in the body. More developed paragraphs and clearer links between claims and supporting details would make the progression more consistently logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss urban housing, including “constantly evolving population,” “nuclear families,” “maintain,” and “growing demand of housing.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the topic is generally handled clearly. There are, however, some imprecise or unnatural collocations, such as “a fast growing population,” “a short time on hand,” and “a nice option.” “Growing demand of housing” is also less natural than the usual phrasing for this idea. The repeated use of general words such as “people,” “big,” and “option” limits precision. Aim for more specific language about housing supply, density, affordability, and land use, while checking that less familiar phrases collocate naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the reason clause “A major reason is…” and the subordinate clause beginning “when people do not have enough time.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. For example, “A small 2 bedroom apartment were a life saver” has a subject–verb agreement error; it should be “was.” In “More and more people are moving to the big cities from the suburbs,” the tense and meaning could be made more precise for a general trend. The sentence beginning “Most times” also combines several ideas in a way that would benefit from clearer punctuation or division. Continue using varied structures, but proofread agreement, tense, and sentence boundaries carefully.
