IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In megacities, the most feasible way to provide hosuing to individuals is by building tall apartments. I disagree with this statement as if a busy/large city would have tall overly populated buildings would effect the livelihood of the residents that are already there and it would disrupt the balance of the nature, such as, trees, birds and other living things.

Having tall apartments to cater homes for more individuals would block the sunlight which is a great source for vitamins for human beings and the trees in the area would die as there will not be any photosynthesis. No trees mean fewer birds as there will not be any nests. For example, megacities like Tokyo or New York have multiple skyscrapers but there are not many signs of nature within the city. Additionally, tall housing apartments would attract more people, which will in fact increase the population and hence more traffic, more busy and fast-paced lives and this will result in a bit of a dull and depressed life.

Residents that were living in that city before urbanisation would suffer a lot. As their normal routes for travelling would be congested. Many homes would be demolished to make enough square feet to cater new apartment blocks and new road would be build on those demolished areas. To give a clear example of this, a resident in China refused to destroy his home for new highways, so the engineers build a highway around his house and evantually he had to leave as he had to suffer from the noise of passing cars.

In conclusion, I disagree that the large apartment blocks are a solution to provide homes to more people. The government could launch a scheme to provide housing to individuals in the outskirts of a large city and people can commute from there to their jobs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you disagree that tall apartment blocks are the best solution. You give relevant reasons, including effects on nature, increased congestion, and disruption to existing residents, and you support these with examples such as Tokyo and the Chinese homeowner. This addresses the task, but some points are not fully explained or directly tied to whether high-rise housing can provide enough homes. For instance, the claim that tall buildings block sunlight and therefore reduce trees and birds needs more precise explanation, and the China example illustrates road development more than the disadvantages of apartment blocks. Develop each reason with a clearer link to the question and acknowledge why high-rise housing may be effective before explaining your disagreement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion offers an alternative. Ideas generally progress from environmental effects to impacts on residents, and signposts such as “Additionally,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The first body paragraph moves from sunlight to population growth and then to depression without fully showing how these points relate. The example about the Chinese homeowner also shifts the focus toward highways. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s central argument, and add explicit links between evidence and the claim about high-rise housing. This would make the progression more consistently logical and cohesion less dependent on basic linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “urbanisation,” “congested,” “photosynthesis,” and “fast-paced,” which helps communicate several relevant ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “cater homes” and “square feet,” but some combinations are inaccurate or unnatural. “Cater homes” would be better expressed as “provide housing,” while “overly populated buildings” is less precise than “overcrowded buildings.” Spelling errors such as “hosuing,” “evantually,” and “build” for “built” also affect accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but more careful word choice, collocation, and proofreading would make your argument clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and cause-and-effect structures, and your meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening sentence of the second paragraph has an unclear construction: “Having tall apartments to cater homes for more individuals would block the sunlight.” In “a busy/large city would have tall overly populated buildings would effect,” the conditional structure is incomplete and the clause is difficult to follow. There are also errors in agreement and verb forms, as in “new road would be build,” and the sentence beginning “As their normal routes” is a fragment. Work on forming complete clauses, maintaining consistent verb forms, and checking articles and plurals. Greater control of these structures would make your complex ideas easier to follow.
