Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argue that building tall apartment blocks is the most suitable way to increase the number of houses in a city. I firmly agree with the statement because, in a city, buying a land would be astronomically expensive and to control the market of accommodations.

In a city, most fincancial friendly way of owning or renting a property would be to take the advantage of an apartment complex. For example, in Colombo, there are little to none apartement complexes are available. Due to that, people have to travel to the city from far away for their jobs. It is significatly affect their life and consume more time that it should. However, because of previous developments government can not intervene to solve the problem.

The market of accommodations is highly controled by how many properties are availble to rent or own by the people. building tall apartment complex is one of solving the problem. When there are aboundant of properties in a city, market vaule drops rather quickly. It helps to provide homes to everyone for an affordable price. This stratergy could bring more people in to the city, which could led to the prosparity. For example, In Manchester, there are plenty of apartment complexes are avaible and it helped to control the property price. That led people to migrate into the city and develop the city.

In conclusion, I strongly believe the best way to provide enough homes to a city is to build tall apartment complexes. By doing so, it will financially benefit the citizens and will control the property market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes, and you give relevant reasons about land costs and housing affordability. The Colombo example also helps illustrate how limited apartment development can affect residents’ travel. However, the point about controlling the accommodation market is not fully explained: clarify how increasing supply would affect rents or purchase prices, and avoid the unclear claim that the government cannot intervene because of previous developments. The Manchester example is relevant, but its link between apartment availability, prices and city growth needs more specific support. Developing these ideas more fully would make the response more convincing and complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas generally progress from the cost and convenience of apartment living to its possible effect on housing supply and prices. Linking phrases such as “For example,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between points. At times, though, the connections are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, “However” does not clearly show how the government’s inability to intervene relates to the preceding point about commuting. The sentence beginning “The market of accommodations…” also needs a clearer link to the proposed solution. Use more precise transitions and make each paragraph’s central point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to housing and urban development, including “apartment complexes,” “property price,” “affordable price,” and “migrate into the city.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions such as “astronomically expensive” and “prosperity.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “fincancial,” “apartement,” “significatly,” “controled,” and “availble.” Some word combinations are also unnatural, such as “financially friendly way” and “market of accommodations.” Choose more conventional collocations and check spelling carefully. Greater precision in describing housing supply, rents and property values would help you express the argument more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, for example, “When there are abundant properties in a city, market value drops rather quickly.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. The opening sentence has an incomplete construction after “because”: “because, in a city, buying a land would be astronomically expensive and to control…” The phrase “It is significantly affect their life” also has an incorrect verb pattern, while “there are plenty of apartment complexes are available” combines two sentence structures. Review articles, verb forms and sentence boundaries, and make sure each clause has a clear grammatical structure. More accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
