Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is this notion that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities(like Dhaka) is to build tall apartment blocks. This is a very simple way of looking at a problem. It maybe one of the solutions but surely not the best way.

In large cities like Dhaka city, the popluation is extremely high. There is approximately one home per twenty families. Due to the shortage of living spaces, these families are often living on the streets of the city. Homelesness has gone way higher compared to the past. In my experience, I see more homeless people than livable spaces every day living in Dhaka city. There are buildings all over the city: skyscrapers, duplexes, tin houses etc. But still a huge number of people have to live on the streets.

Building tall apartments could provide them with enough homes but it would also come with a hoard of issues. For example, the rent would skyrocket. The taller the buildings, the more energy and commodities would be needed. Hence, the bills would also go up. Also, during this age where earthquakes are occurring more often, especially in Dhaka which is an earthquale prone city, building skyscrapers is not a wise decision in my opinion.

On the flipside of this, I do think making taller buildings could be a solution but to a certain extent. We need to keep in my mind that most people that are need of housing, are at a financial disadvantage. So, if the rent and bills could be kept in an affordable range, those people could get enough homes. Also, careful and safe construction needs to be considered.

This could take a long time to plan and implement. In the meantime, homeless population would go even higher and might exceed the apartment number.

There is not a guaranteed way to solve the homeless issue in large cities but I think overall planning needs to be pristine. Just building tall apartment blocks is not nearly enough.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: tall apartment blocks may help, but they are not the best solution on their own. You address both the potential benefit and drawbacks, including affordability, higher bills, earthquake risk, and the time needed to plan construction. The Dhaka example makes the discussion relevant. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for instance, the claim that there is “approximately one home per twenty families” is striking but not supported, and the link between taller buildings and higher rents or energy costs needs clearer reasoning. The final paragraph introduces overall planning but does not specify what alternatives or measures it would involve. Develop these ideas more fully and support key claims with explanation or examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: it introduces your view, describes the housing shortage, considers disadvantages, qualifies your position, and concludes that tall blocks alone are insufficient. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and signposts such as “For example,” “On the flipside,” and “In the meantime” make relationships between ideas visible. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. “This” in “This could take a long time” could refer to affordable construction or the planning process, while “On the flipside” suggests a contrast even though the paragraph partly agrees with the previous point. Use more precise transitions and connect each paragraph’s main idea explicitly to your overall position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “shortage of living spaces,” “homelessness,” “financial disadvantage,” and “earthquake-prone city.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “a certain extent” help express qualification. There are also some inaccurate or informal choices that reduce precision: “a hoard of issues” is not the natural collocation here, “livable spaces” is unclear in context, and “pristine” does not naturally describe planning. Spelling errors such as “popluation,” “Homelesness,” and “earthquale” are noticeable, although the meaning remains understandable. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread spelling; this would make your vocabulary more controlled and appropriate for an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “Due to the shortage of living spaces…” and a conditional sentence beginning “if the rent and bills could be kept…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “There is approximately one home per twenty families” has a number-agreement problem, and “most people that are need of housing” has an incorrect construction. The sentence “In my experience, I see more homeless people than livable spaces every day living in Dhaka city” is also awkwardly structured, making the comparison difficult to follow. Review agreement, clause construction, and sentence boundaries, and revise unclear sentences while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
