Student answer (Band 6.0)

One of the significant ways to accomodate more homes in urban areas is to construct tall apartment blocks. I disagree with this view because the houses lack ventilation and restricts physical movement.

Tall apartment blocks often lacks ventilation. In large cities, apartments that are constructed next to each other doesnot get fresh air because the buildings are built closer. This makes people living in the tall buildings fall sick frequently. For example, if a person is residing in the apartment suffers from the flu, the germs remain in the house for a longer time which can easily make other people in the same household become sick. This is because the house doesnot get enough fresh air to kill the germs. Therefore, ventilated houses often prevents the spread of infections .

Additionally, apartment blocks restrict physical movement. The construction of the apartment blocks is often compact because it is constructed with a view to accomodate more homes in the city. People use lifts to reach their floor, which means no climing of stairs is involved. Moreover, the houses are not spacious, meaning that there is no space to move freely inside the house. Reduced physical movement leaves a negative impact on the individual's health such as joint problems and diabeties.

In conclusion, I disagree with the view that constructing tall buildings to provide accomodation in large cities is building tall apartment blocks because they dont have ventilation, which make people fall sick very often. Moreover, people develop various health issues due to decline in physical movement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you disagree with relying on tall apartment blocks, and you give two relevant reasons—ventilation and limited movement. The examples about illness and health effects help explain these concerns. However, the response only partly addresses the question of whether this is the best way to provide enough homes: it focuses on possible disadvantages to residents but does not compare this approach with alternatives or explain how other housing methods could meet demand. Some support is also under-developed; for instance, the claim that poor ventilation causes germs to remain in a home is asserted rather than convincingly explained. Develop each reason with more precise evidence and connect it directly to the housing-supply question.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Additionally,” “For example,” and “Therefore” make the progression easy to follow. This coherent organisation meets the expected standard, and the paragraph focus is generally clear. To make the progression more flexible and precise, avoid repeating the same point in the conclusion and ensure that each link expresses the intended relationship. In particular, “Therefore, ventilated houses often prevents the spread of infections” does not follow clearly from the preceding discussion, which describes a lack of ventilation. More explicit connections between the health concerns and the question of providing homes would also strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “urban areas,” “ventilation,” “physical movement,” and “compact.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “leaves a negative impact” and “decline in physical movement.” However, the range is limited and some choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which can make parts of the argument less clear. For example, “accomodate” is misspelled, “climing” and “diabeties” are also spelling errors, and “ventilated houses often prevents” uses an unclear expression for your intended point. Aim for more precise housing and health vocabulary, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and longer structures, including a conditional example beginning “if a person is residing…” and a sentence explaining the effect of using lifts. Meaning is generally understandable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction recur. For example, “Tall apartment blocks often lacks” should have a plural verb, while “apartments … doesnot get” also has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The sentence “if a person is residing in the apartment suffers” combines clauses incorrectly, and “which make people fall sick” has an agreement error. There are also punctuation and spacing slips. Practise building accurate complex sentences and check that each verb agrees with its subject.
