IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is important to build apartments in cities for enough homes. I totally agree with this statement that apartments are very crucial for growth in cities because of expanding population day by day.

First of all, land is not enough to give accomodations to so many people that is why the authorities capture the agricultural land and make housing societies and markets to fulfill the needs of the locals therefore prices of vegetables and fruits are increasing and creating a cause for inflation.

Also, there are plenty of citizens who are buying property in cities just to make farm houses and securing their money which increase the need of expansion as if we talk about Lahore it is expanding to even other cities.

On the other hand, with so much competition and many people who are willing to buy land has created an artificial inflation and prices of land is so expensive that many citizens can't afford to build their own house as a result if apartments will build on a land it has many floors which cause price control and accomodation control.

Where an area with 200 canals have a capacity of carring 500 families in my perspective an apartment with 50 to 100 flats can carry enough citizens.

In concluding my opinion, apartment blocks are very important for growth of cities and betterment for villages also.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear from the opening: you totally agree that apartments are important in growing cities. You give relevant reasons, including pressure on agricultural land, rising property prices, and the greater number of families that can live in flats. However, the response addresses the task only partially because the ideas are brief and some links to the question are unclear. For example, the point about people buying land for farmhouses is not fully explained, and the comparison between 200 canals and 50 to 100 flats needs clearer reasoning or evidence. The conclusion repeats your view rather than drawing the reasons together. The response is also 22 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop your argument. Explain each main point and support it with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, a counterpoint introduced by “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all” and “Also” help signal the order of ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear. The second paragraph combines agricultural land, housing societies, food prices, and inflation in one long chain, while the next point about farmhouses is not clearly connected to the argument. The final body paragraph is difficult to follow because several claims are joined together without clear sentence boundaries. Use one central idea per paragraph, explain how it supports your position, and use linking words to show precise relationships rather than simply adding points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “agricultural land,” “housing societies,” “artificial inflation,” and “apartments,” so the reader can identify the subject of your argument. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes meaning less clear. For instance, “capture the agricultural land” is not a natural way to describe converting farmland, and “price control and accomodation control” does not clearly express the intended benefits. Spelling errors such as “accomodations” and “carring” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of phrases for urban housing and land use, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with reasons, such as the sentence beginning “First of all” and the explanation of how apartments could accommodate more people. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow. In “there are plenty of citizens who are buying property … which increase the need,” the verb does not agree with its subject; “prices of land is” also has an agreement error. The clause “if apartments will build on a land” has an incorrect verb form and article use. Punctuation is also needed to separate ideas in the long final body paragraph. Practise accurate conditional forms and subject–verb agreement, and divide long sentences into clearer units.
