Student answer (Band 6.0)

The statement that the best way to provide sufficient homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks would generate different takes and opinions. Personally, I strongly agree with the statement. Building tall apartment buildings would mean more apartments without taking or using up more land area. Also building tall apartment, which is a vertical expansion or development gives unlimited room compared to horizontal expansion.

Building tall aparment buildings, provides more apartments while making the land available for other uses in the development of the city. In devoloped citiies like New york, it is very noticeable that there are tall buildings to accomodate more residential space without using up much land. In devoloped cities it is quite rare to see flats as most are demolished so as to erect storey buildings.

In addition, the growth of the population in some cities requires an unlimited space for the establishment of homes. The only way to get unlimited space is to develop vertically, horizontal development is limited. For this reason, the foundations of most the buildings in these cities are established in a way that allows more floors to be added in the future.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with the statement that the best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. As this allows the maximum use of the limited residential lands and also gives room for the unlimited development of residential spaces. Until we are capable technologically to build floating houses, it is essential that we build taller buildings and develop vertically.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you strongly agree that tall apartment blocks can provide more homes while using less land. The points about vertical development and population growth are relevant, and the New York example gives some support. However, the response is under the required length: it contains 234 words, 16 short of the 250-word minimum, and 26 words copied from the prompt were not counted. As a result, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For example, the claim that vertical development offers “unlimited space” is overstated and needs qualification, while the New York example is not explained in detail. Develop the reasoning and add a further relevant example or consideration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “In addition,” “For this reason,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the progression. This coherent structure meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, connections between claims are occasionally mechanical or unclear. For instance, “In developed cities it is quite rare to see flats as most are demolished so as to erect storey buildings” does not clearly explain how this supports the preceding point about land use. The conclusion also repeats earlier claims rather than drawing the reasoning together. Use clearer references and explain the relationship between each example and its main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “residential space,” “vertical expansion,” “horizontal development,” and “foundations,” so the main argument is understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices or collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, which makes parts of the response less clear. “Unlimited room” and “unlimited space” overstate the benefits of building upwards; “more available space” would be more accurate. “Different takes and opinions” is informal for this essay, while “different viewpoints” would be more suitable. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “aparment,” “devoloped,” “citiies,” and “accomodate.” Aim for precise, formal wording and proofread carefully, especially for repeated topic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex structures, including the relative clause “which is a vertical expansion or development” and the conditional idea “Until we are capable technologically to build floating houses.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur often enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “Building tall apartment buildings, provides” has an unnecessary comma between the subject and verb, and “the foundations of most the buildings” is missing “of” after “most.” The sentence beginning “As this allows” is a fragment, and “horizontal development is limited” needs clearer punctuation or a linking word after the preceding clause. Practise accurate clause boundaries, articles and prepositions, while retaining a range of sentence forms.
