Student answer (Band 6.0)

By constructing high rise building, may help to reduce housing crisis in urban areas. I partially disagree with this statement that although this can provides more housing facilities, there are other alternatives to solve this problem. This essay will discuss the reasons and examples that support my argument.

On the one hand, most of the companies and organisations have built in cities, therefore people always want to live in these areas. Consequently, skyscrapers with more apartments can accommodate more number of families and individuals, which helps them to stay in cities and they can easily commute to their work places. For example, cities like Sydney and Melbourne face housing shortages due to the high rate of immigration. Therefore, tall buildings with more apartment blocks can be a solution.

Conversely, constructing a large number of apartments in cities not only be an effective resolution, because it causes overpopulation, pressure on infrastructure and high housing rentals. So that, the government and cooperate companies can develop the infrastructure of sub-urban areas with more apartments and other facilities such as transportation, shops, hospitals and schools, which may reduce the rush in cities. For instance, nowadays individuals prefer small town to live and work, because it provides same facilities as cities do. Hence, a well-developed sub-urban areas can attract more people and it also prevent the housing crisis in cities.

In conclusion, to compact housing shortages in cities, constructing flats can be a solution. I partially disagree with this statement, even though it can accommodate more people, developing sub-urban areas can also be a solution to this problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you partially disagree because tall apartments can add housing, but developing suburban areas offers another response. You address both sides and give relevant examples, including immigration-related demand in Sydney and Melbourne and the facilities that could make suburbs attractive. This meets the task well, but the support is uneven: the first body paragraph explains the convenience of living near work, while the claims that apartment construction causes overpopulation and high rents are asserted rather than explained. The example about people preferring small towns is also broad and would be stronger with a specific illustration. Develop these points further and clarify why suburban development is preferable, rather than simply another possible solution, to make the argument more fully convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from the benefits of high-rise housing to suburban alternatives is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “Conversely” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. However, some linking is mechanical, and a few connections are not expressed smoothly. For example, “So that” does not work naturally as the link introducing the proposed alternative, while “Therefore” repeats the cause-and-result pattern in the first body paragraph. The conclusion restates the position but adds little synthesis. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting explanation more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “housing crisis,” “accommodate,” “infrastructure,” “immigration” and “commute.” These choices make the subject clear, and attempts at more formal language show some range. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “more number of families,” “cooperate companies,” “compact housing shortages” and “housing rentals.” “Sub-urban” is also better written as “suburban.” These slips do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations rather than choosing a formal-sounding phrase whose meaning or usage is uncertain; for instance, use “address housing shortages” and “corporate companies” or simply “businesses.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “skyscrapers with more apartments can accommodate …, which helps them” and a conditional-style explanation of how suburban facilities may reduce pressure on cities. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and limit control. Examples include the incomplete opening construction “By constructing high rise building, may help,” the incorrect verb form in “this can provides,” and the agreement error in “a well-developed sub-urban areas … it also prevent.” There are also problems with articles, plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “not only be an effective resolution, because.” Work on complete clause structure, subject–verb agreement and consistent singular/plural forms, then proofread punctuation and spacing.
