Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is largely believed that the best way to tackle the housing problem in large cities is to to build the tall apartment blocks. I mostly reckon that, although, there are several benefits to it, the developmental drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

On the one hand, tall apartment blocks have the large number of apartments to live in, which can be beneficial to build a small communtiy among neighbours. Having a community to fall back on in the time of need and celebrating festivals together, facilitates in to improving social life . Another point to add, large building requires less space to build, which means less pollution which can severly affect the environment. For example, to build a residental dwelling, whether apartments or raw houses, requires a large land. Constructing an apartment building significantly helps in save a land, and which ultimately affect the enviornment.

On the other hand, it is becoming quite expensive to live in such big apartments in the cities. There are several number of factors affecting the cost of living, such as inflation, rent, maintainance fees, other miscallenous fees. Which in addition forms a big number. Furthermore, in order to make the large number of apartments in one building is quite a hassle. Most importantly, the more number of apartments means the less space allocated to each one. Residents would have to make a lot of space adjustments to fit basic appliances in their home.

To conclude, although it offers tight community and can produce less pollution, the side effects are major, such as city life is becoming outragously expensive and not enough space to lead a comfortable life in the city.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you mostly disagree that tall apartment blocks are the best solution, and you address both advantages and disadvantages. The points about community and using less land are relevant, as are the concerns about cost and limited living space. This meets the task, but the ideas are not developed equally. For example, the community benefit is explained with examples such as celebrating festivals, while the claim that apartment blocks reduce pollution is asserted without showing how this follows from using less land. The drawbacks also need more precise support: explain why construction is difficult or how costs affect residents. Develop each main point with a clear explanation or a specific example, and make the comparison behind your overall judgement more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from benefits to drawbacks is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” help orient the reader. This organisation is effective, though some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Which in addition forms a big number” is a sentence fragment and does not clearly connect the list of costs to the point about affordability. The example beginning “For example” also shifts between housing types without a fully clear comparison. Use cohesive devices more naturally, and ensure each sentence clearly develops the point before moving to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to housing and urban life, including “apartment blocks,” “community,” “pollution,” “inflation,” and “maintenance fees.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “space allocated to each one.” However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise. Examples include “raw houses” where the intended housing type is unclear, “tight community,” and “forms a big number.” Several spellings are inaccurate, including “communtiy,” “severly,” “residental,” and “enviornment.” Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. A more precise vocabulary range would help express the housing and environmental arguments without relying on vague phrases such as “other miscellaneous fees.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction and clauses beginning “which means” and “whether.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “I mostly reckon that, although, there are several benefits to it” has awkward clause structure and punctuation, while “facilitates in to improving” uses an incorrect verb pattern. In “in order to make the large number of apartments in one building is quite a hassle,” the sentence structure is incomplete, and “Which in addition forms a big number” is a fragment. Review article use, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, and practise building complex sentences with one clear main clause. This will make your varied structures more accurate.
