IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued by some people that urban areas should have multi-story buildings to create more space for living. Although some people might disagree with the statement, but I completely agree. Not only because of less usage of land and enough space for parking, but also in terms to reduce the forest cutting.
Tall flats projects are the need of every big city across the glode. Firstly, shortage of land availability is the rising issue of the urband areas. As increase the numbers of apartmnets in a building could provide the more space for the people without consuming extra plots. Take an example of housing minister of Sweeden, he ordered in his last notification that no one is

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your position is clear: “I completely agree,” and you give relevant reasons, including using less land, providing parking space, and reducing forest clearance. However, the response addresses the task only minimally because these points are introduced but not explained or supported. The example about a Swedish housing minister is unfinished, so it does not show how tall apartment blocks would provide enough homes. The response also stops before developing a conclusion or considering any qualification to your view. In addition, it contains 119 words, below the required 250. To improve, explain each reason with a clear cause-and-effect link and a complete, relevant example, then summarise your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: you begin with an introduction and then start a body paragraph with “Firstly,” which signals a reason. The main ideas—land use, parking and forests—are relevant, but their relationships are not clearly developed, and the response ends abruptly during the example. The opening phrase “Not only because…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, while “Although some people might disagree…, but…” uses two contrasting markers together, making the connection awkward. To create clearer progression, give each paragraph one main point, explain it, and connect it to a specific example. Complete the body and add a concluding paragraph so the reader can follow the argument from position to final judgement.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt some topic-related vocabulary, including “urban areas,” “multi-story buildings,” “shortage of land,” and “consuming extra plots.” These choices show an effort to discuss housing and city planning, but the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning harder to follow. For example, “less usage of land” and “forest cutting” do not express the ideas as naturally as standard planning vocabulary would. There are also spelling errors such as “glode,” “urband,” “apartmnets,” and “Sweeden.” Build a more precise set of collocations for housing and land use, and check spelling carefully. This will make your ideas clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a complex opening with “Although some people might disagree…,” and use a comparative structure in “without consuming extra plots.” However, the range of sentence forms is limited, and errors in the attempted complex structures are frequent enough to affect clarity. “Although some people might disagree with the statement, but I completely agree” incorrectly combines two contrasting conjunctions. “As increase the numbers…” lacks a clear subject and has faulty verb structure, while “the more space” uses an unnecessary article in this context. The opening fragment beginning “Not only because…” also needs a main clause. Practise building complete sentences with one clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles and clause links before submitting.
