Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is of no doubt that a sustainable means of providing enough housing in urban areas is by constructing highrise buildings and blocks of flat. I strongly agree with this opinion because of it's environmental impact and societal importance.

On the one hand, building tall buildings helps reduce tension on the environment by making it possible for land users and ensuring enough spacing to avoid overcrowding in cities. There is always limited lands for construction of new buildings. Futhermore, a major city in Nigeria (Lagos) have a pollution of almost 2 million people living there and skybuildings are constructed in order to accommodate government officials such as military personnels. This also in return avoid diseases caused by overcrowding such as heat shock and transmicable diseases.

On the other hand, building highrise apartments gives room for socialization ine the society. People tend to live close to each other rather than the single fenced apartments in most rural areas. For example, all army officers in Lagos are mandated to live in the same apartment, this is to enable them interact and to share cultural activities.

In conclusion, housing is a crucial and fundamental aspect of human right, providing an adequate amount of shelter/homes through construction of storey building is advisable and also a great method for accomodating a large number of families. This will play a cruciial role in the environmental control tto prevent overcrowding and also promote socialization in the society. I am of the opinion that government and individuals should provide more of tall buildings to make the environment co-friendly.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and maintained in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons—environmental efficiency and social interaction—and include Lagos and army officers as examples, so the response addresses the question. However, the reasons are not developed equally or precisely. The claim that tall buildings reduce environmental pressure needs explanation of how they use land more efficiently, while the Lagos example is unclear: “a pollution of almost 2 million people” does not establish what the figure refers to or how it supports the argument. The socialisation point is relevant but would benefit from a fuller explanation of why apartment living promotes it. Develop each main idea with a clear explanation and a specific, credible example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from environmental benefits to social benefits is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help the reader navigate the argument. This is a coherent overall arrangement. To make the progression more consistently smooth, ensure that each paragraph develops one central point in a clear sequence. The Lagos sentence combines population, pollution, construction, and government officials without showing the links between them, so the reader must infer the connection. Some linking phrases also feel formulaic. Use clearer references and transitions that explain relationships between claims, rather than relying mainly on standard paragraph openers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “sustainable,” “overcrowding,” “socialization,” and “fundamental aspect,” which helps communicate the subject. However, several word choices, collocations, and spelling forms are inaccurate or unnatural, and these sometimes make the meaning unclear. For example, “a pollution of almost 2 million people” appears to confuse pollution with population, while “skybuildings” and “transmicable” are not appropriate forms. “Highrise” and “blocks of flat” also need more standard phrasing. These issues fit a limited but functional range: the main ideas can generally be understood, but precision is inconsistent. Build accuracy by checking collocations and spelling, and prefer familiar, exact expressions when unsure of a more ambitious term.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a reason clause in “I strongly agree … because of…” and a relative clause in “diseases caused by overcrowding.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “a major city … have” has subject–verb disagreement, and “There is always limited lands” has problems with the noun’s number and the sentence structure. The opening phrase “It is of no doubt that” is also not formed correctly. Review agreement, articles, countable and uncountable nouns, and sentence construction. Aim to make complex sentences accurate before adding further complexity, and proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries so that each claim is expressed clearly.
