IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I disagree in building tall apartments in large cities to provide enough majourly because of safety purposes. The tall buildings could lack structural support and the building could collapse causing harm and even death to the people living in the buildings.
Tall buildings will mean people have to use staircase and even elevators in accessing the top level floors. The elderly people will face a challenge using a steep staircase if a elevator is not functional or not available. Their weak bones will not allow them to use the long stairs which could pose health effect to individuals.
Another reason for disagreeing is bacause of people throwing themselves and others from the tall buildings, for exaple in Nairobi Kenya they have been cases of men throwing their girlfriends down when they face any callenges. Also when people are suicidal they tend to thgrow themselves from tall buildings.
Children also could be tempted to jump whenever they are playing.
Another reason is levelmof hygiene in the apartment will be low as the number of people goes up. Insecurity goes up, for example in Nairobi, if many people occupy a tall bulding , theft is a problem they majoirly face with people breaking in somebody's houses.
Thus, buildings should just be small to compart negative effects associated with it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear from the opening (“I disagree”) and the response gives several relevant reasons, including structural safety, access for older people, suicide and child safety, hygiene, and theft. However, the task is only partially addressed: most points are asserted briefly rather than explained or supported with developed examples, and the Nairobi references are not expanded enough to show how they support the argument. The conclusion repeats the preference for smaller buildings but does not weigh the proposed solution against the need for housing in large cities. The response is also 33 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop your reasoning. Explain fewer points in greater depth and address why alternatives would provide enough homes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic overall structure: it begins with your position, presents several reasons, and ends with a conclusion. Paragraphing helps separate some ideas, and phrases such as “Another reason” and “Thus” signal progression. However, the sequence feels like a list rather than a developed argument, with repeated transitions and little explanation connecting claims to their consequences. The paragraph about people falling from buildings shifts between violence, suicide, and children playing without clear links. Some references are also unclear, such as “it” in the final sentence. Group related safety points together, use transitions that show cause and contrast, and make each paragraph develop one main idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a range of topic-related words, including “structural support,” “suicidal,” “hygiene,” and “insecurity,” so the reader can generally understand the concerns you raise. However, vocabulary is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to follow: “majourly,” “bacause,” “exaple,” “thgrow,” “levelmof,” and “bulding.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “provide enough majourly,” “health effect,” and “breaking in somebody’s houses.” Aim for accurate collocations and more precise wording, for example, describe buildings as “structurally unsafe” or say that residents may face “security problems.” Proofreading spelling would also improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences use simple structures, and you attempt some longer sentences to explain consequences, such as “The tall buildings could lack structural support and the building could collapse causing harm.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in sentence construction, articles, agreement, and punctuation. Examples include “I disagree in building tall apartments,” “use staircase,” and “if a elevator is not functional”; these patterns make the writing less natural and sometimes slow understanding. The sentence beginning “Another reason for disagreeing is…” also becomes difficult to follow because several ideas are joined without clear punctuation. Practise accurate sentence patterns such as “I disagree with building…” and “If an elevator is unavailable, older residents may have difficulty using the stairs.”
