Student answer (Band 4.0)
Food, cloth and house are the basic needs of mankind. Due to surge in human population, it is essential to construct residence building to provide home to citizens. In my view, having tall infrastructure for resident building provides viable solution to accomodate significant numbers of migrants and citizens of the country.
To begin with, a number of people from small village and town travels to big cities in search of better jobs. In addition to that, students from the underdeveloped areas of the country,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response gives a relevant position: “In my view,” tall residential buildings are presented as a viable way to accommodate city residents and migrants. It also begins a supporting reason by mentioning people moving from villages and towns for work, and students from less-developed areas. However, the answer stops before explaining these points, giving examples, or considering whether tall blocks are the best solution compared with alternatives. The position is therefore only minimally supported, and the task is addressed very incompletely. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, which leaves too little space to develop the argument. To improve, state your degree of agreement clearly, develop two reasons with specific examples, and add a conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening paragraph introduces the topic and position, followed by a paragraph beginning “To begin with” that starts a supporting point. This gives the reader some sense of direction. However, the progression is not completed: the second paragraph ends abruptly after “students from the underdeveloped areas of the country,” so the relationship between this point and the argument remains unclear. There is no developed sequence of supporting ideas or concluding paragraph. The linking phrases “Due to” and “In addition to that” are understandable, but they cannot compensate for the incomplete structure. Build complete paragraphs around one main idea each, explain how each supports your position, and use a final paragraph to summarise your view.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “human population,” “residence building,” “migrants,” and “underdeveloped areas,” and the general meaning is usually recoverable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “provides viable solution.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “Food, cloth and house” would be more naturally expressed as “food, clothing and housing,” while “tall infrastructure for resident building” is unclear compared with “high-rise apartment buildings.” “Accomodate” is misspelled, and “significant numbers” is vague without further detail. Aim for accurate collocations and precise terms related to housing and urban planning, and check spelling. The limited amount of writing also gives little evidence of a broader vocabulary range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes some controlled simple sentences and an attempt at a complex opening clause: “Due to surge in human population, it is essential to construct…” The main message is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “a number of people from small village and town travels” has problems with plural forms and subject–verb agreement; “students from the underdeveloped areas of the country,” is left as an unfinished clause; and “provides viable solution” is missing an article. The sentence structures are mostly basic, with little evidence of a wider range. Practise plural agreement and articles, and ensure every sentence expresses a complete thought. Using a few accurately formed complex sentences to explain causes and consequences would also strengthen the response.
