Student answer (Band 5.5)

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. I agree with this statement because i believe it is an easy way of accomudating alot of people on realtively less land than houses and preserve green spaces.

In my opinion, building tall apartment blocks can help people to find a place to live more easily than houses. It is also alot cheaper than buying or renting a house to live in. Some of the landlords of the buildings provide alot of facilities including built in kitchen equipments in their apartments so you do not have to spend money on that. Also other house equipments including air-conditioner and refrigerator are also mostly available. It is more convenient than a house as their are grocery stores just a walking distance away.

Building tall apartment blocks can help to preserve the greenry areas as they take less land on earth and accomudate a large amount of people so there is less for people to destroy green lands and build houses there. Which has its own benefits such as making the weather and environment nice and clean. While if you destroy the green lands for the sake of house building it causes negative impacts on the environment. It makes the weather hotter causing global warming. Cutting of trees also result in lower oxygen levels making it difficult to breath. Another benefit of building tall apartment blocks is that it gives job opportunities to people especially people living in rural areas. When they get a job in the city they can live in these low rent apartments as they do not have a house here. Also they can get all the essential house equipments there.

So in my conclusion, building tall apartment blocks is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. It is more convenient and easy. It also has some environmental benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes in large cities. You give relevant reasons, including accommodating more people on less land, preserving green areas, and offering employment-related housing. The environmental point is supported with consequences such as hotter weather and reduced oxygen. However, some claims are asserted rather than explained—for example, that apartments are “alot cheaper” and that building them creates jobs for rural residents. The discussion of facilities and nearby grocery stores also shifts towards convenience rather than directly showing why this is the best way to increase housing supply. Develop these points with clearer explanations or examples, and consider acknowledging a limitation before explaining why your position still stands. The response meets the task length requirement; 26 words copied from the prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two main body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas generally progress from affordability and convenience to environmental benefits. Linking phrases such as “Also,” “Another benefit” and “So in my conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical, and the second body paragraph combines several points—green space, climate, oxygen and employment—without clearly separating or developing them. The sentence beginning “Which has its own benefits” is a fragment, so its link to the preceding idea is unclear. Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s main purpose, group related support together, and connect examples more precisely rather than relying on repeated additive transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “apartment blocks,” “green spaces,” “global warming” and “job opportunities.” Some phrases also show an attempt to express specific concepts, such as “accommodate a large amount of people.” However, the range is limited by repeated general words such as “people,” “house” and “benefits,” and several choices or spellings are inaccurate: “accomudating,” “realtively,” “greenry,” and “house equipments.” Phrases such as “less land on earth” and “weather nice and clean” are also imprecise or unnatural. Build a more accurate range for housing and urban planning, and check collocations and spelling. More precise wording would make the argument clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and most of the argument remains understandable. For example, you use a reason clause in “because I believe…” and a conditional structure in “if you destroy the green lands…”. However, some sentence boundaries and grammatical patterns are faulty. “Which has its own benefits” is a fragment, while “Cutting of trees also result” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also errors in structures such as “there are grocery stores just a walking distance away” and “it gives job opportunities to people especially people living in rural areas,” where punctuation and sentence control need attention. Practise joining dependent clauses to complete sentences, checking agreement, and using commas to separate introductory or explanatory phrases.
