Student answer (Band 6.5)

nowadays many people move tonlarge cities to find better jobs andeducation as a result finding a suitalbe home has become a serious problem some people believe that building tall apartment blocks is the best solution i partly agree with this idea because buildings can provide more homes but there are also some disadvantages. one the one hand tall apartment buildings can help solve the housing problem. they allow many people to live in the same area so cities do not need to use too land. this is especially important in crowded cities where land is expensive. for example a building with twenty floors can provide homes for many families. also people may live closer to their workplaces, school and shops. this can reduce their travel time and make daily life easier. on the other hand, i believe that building more apartments is not the inly solution. tall buildings can be expensive to construct and maintain. in addition too many apartment blocks can make cities crowded and noisy. people also need parks, playgrounds and other public spaces if cities only build tall buildings the quality of life may become worse. for example children need safe places to play and families need green areas to relax. in my opinion governments shuld build apartment blocks but also consider other solutions. they can improve public transport and build more houses in smaller towns near large cities. this would help people find affordable homes and reduce the pressure on city centres. in conclusion i partly agree that tall apartment blocks are useful way to provide more homes however i believe that a combination of different solutions is better for creating comfortable snd affordable places to live.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you partly agree that tall apartment blocks can help, while arguing that they should be combined with other measures. You address both sides of the question and support your points with relevant examples, such as a twenty-floor building housing many families and the need for parks and play areas. The suggestions to improve public transport and develop nearby smaller towns also extend your response beyond the immediate pros and cons. Some points, however, are asserted rather than fully explained: for instance, you say that too many blocks can make cities crowded and noisy, but do not show how this might be managed or why it outweighs the housing benefit. Developing one or two examples further would make the argument more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your position, the two body sections present contrasting considerations, and the conclusion restates your view. Signposts such as “on the one hand,” “on the other hand,” and “in conclusion” help readers follow the argument. However, the progression can feel mechanical because the discussion relies heavily on these formulaic transitions and repeated “also” and “for example.” Some sentence boundaries are unclear, particularly where “if cities only build tall buildings” runs directly into the next idea. Use paragraph breaks consistently and connect related points with clearer referencing or varied linking phrases, so the relationships between claims and examples are easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including relevant terms such as “housing problem,” “workplaces,” “public transport,” “affordable homes,” and “quality of life.” These choices make your main ideas clear, and phrases such as “reduce the pressure on city centres” show an attempt to express the issue more precisely. At times, however, wording is repetitive or imprecise: “building tall apartment blocks” and “provide more homes” recur, while “use too land” does not express the intended meaning naturally. Spelling slips such as “suitalbe,” “inly,” and “shuld” also reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of natural collocations for housing and urban planning, and proofread carefully for spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple statements and longer structures, including a reason clause in “because buildings can provide more homes” and a conditional construction beginning “if cities only build tall buildings.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some errors in sentence boundaries, articles, and grammatical forms make the writing less controlled. For example, “if cities only build tall buildings the quality of life may become worse” needs punctuation between the conditional clause and the main clause, and “a useful way” requires an article in the conclusion. Several ideas are joined with commas or run together, which obscures where one sentence ends. Practise accurate complex sentences and check articles, punctuation, and sentence boundaries during revision.
