Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that building tall apartment blocks is the best way to overcome the shortage of homes. I partially agree with this statement due to several reasons such as overcrowing and pollution in cities or social issues.

On the one hand, as the cities are getting populated day by day it is difficuilt to provide all people with homes. In this situation many people think to build tall buildings in cities with small apartments. There are several benefits of small apartments such as budget friendly and other features such as shopping malls in the same building. In many skyscrappers, there are branded shopping malls inside the same building. This help people to buy things without travelling for long periods of time. Moreover, there are built-in lifts near the parking area so that people do not have to walk too much to reach their apartment. Futhermore, there is no shortage of the electricity in such buildings because they have the generators that contribute in availabilty of electricity all the time.

On the other hand, there are various drawbacks of living in apartments. For example, in many apartments, there is no space for children to play which is essential for physical growth of children, Also, there is a lack of privacy for the bigger families due to the smaller apartments. Besides that, in the crowded cities there is shortage of the resources such as electricity or water supply due to the heavy usage of equipments or using water for hygiene purposes in these buildings. To overcome these problems, the government should promote the sub urban or rural areas by launching some schemes to help the people build their homes. Also, the government should improve the infrastructure of these areas to deveop interest in people toward these areas.

In conclusion, the tall buildings offer some benefits along with some drawbacks. The government should play a role to overcome these problems and promote rural and sub-urban areas to eliminate the shortage of homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partially agree that tall apartment blocks can help address housing shortages, while recognising disadvantages and proposing investment in suburban or rural areas. You give relevant supporting points, including affordability, access to shops and lifts, and limited play space and privacy. This addresses the task, but the discussion is uneven: the benefits are described in detail, whereas the alternative of developing rural areas is mainly presented as a recommendation rather than explained as a way to provide enough homes. Some claims, such as generators ensuring electricity “all the time,” also need qualification or support. To strengthen the response, explain how your proposed alternative would work and make the comparison with high-rise housing more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help signal the two sides, and the ideas within each paragraph generally follow a sensible order. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, the progression is occasionally mechanical because several points are added through “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “Besides that.” Some links between claims are also unclear: the opening mentions overcrowding, pollution and social issues, but these are not all developed in the essay. Group related points more tightly and use clearer explanations of how each example supports your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “shortage of homes,” “privacy,” “infrastructure” and “physical growth.” There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “built-in lifts” and “sub-urban areas.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “overcrowing,” “skyscrappers,” “availabilty” and “deveop.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “think to build tall buildings” and “contribute in availabilty of electricity.” These do not usually prevent understanding, but they limit precision and fluency. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for housing and urban development, rather than relying on direct translations or loosely formed phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style recommendation (“To overcome these problems, the government should…”) and clauses introduced by “because” and “so that.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “This help people” has subject–verb disagreement, while “there is no space for children to play which is essential” needs clearer clause punctuation and structure. Articles and plural forms are also inconsistent in phrases such as “the electricity” and “the bigger families.” Review agreement, article use and punctuation around longer sentences. More accurate control of these patterns would make your argument easier to follow without changing its content.
