Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some individuals believe that the best way to provide enough homes in bigger cities is to build tall apartment blocks. I agree with this view because tall building requires less space and allow a large group of people to stay together.

On the one hand, there are several benefits to build tall buildings. Population has become increasing significantly day by day but our space is limited. So that, construct a tall building provides many people to live there. For example, if a ten floors apartment will build with 4 units, atleast 40 families can live there. While, it is difficult to buy land for 40 families individually because we don't have much space. In addition, it saves more construction cost as well as electicity, water bills, gas bills. Moreover, people can live with a large community which builds social relationships. Children can play with other kids that develop their communication skiils, social bonding, team work. Furtheremore, education facilities and medical opportunities may be developed where many people live together.

On the other hand, building tall apartments have a few drawbacks. Due to living together with many families it's creates noise, pollution and effects on personal lives. For instance, if next door people interfair others personal matters it creates sometimes problems. Another reason is, people sometimes faced sound problems if their neibourours have lots of parties or listen to music loudly.

In conclusion, although building tall apartment blocks have some negative aspects I believe that to provide enough homes it is the best way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including limited land, housing many families in one building, and possible community benefits, with a ten-floor example. However, some points are asserted rather than explained, and the discussion of drawbacks focuses mainly on noise and privacy without weighing these against the housing benefits. The response is also 245 words, so it falls five words short of the required minimum; the eight words copied from the prompt are not counted. Develop and support your main reasons more fully, and ensure the response meets the task length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. This makes your position and main points easy to follow. You also use signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion.” However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “So that” does not connect the preceding idea naturally, and “While” begins a fragment-like contrast. The advantages paragraph also moves quickly from construction costs to social relationships and then facilities, with limited explanation of how these points connect. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and organise each body paragraph around a smaller number of developed ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “population,” “construction cost,” “social relationships,” and “personal lives.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “social bonding” and “medical opportunities.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate word choices or collocations make parts less natural, including “Population has become increasing,” “electicity,” “interfair,” and “neibourours.” Some phrases, such as “education facilities and medical opportunities may be developed,” are vague about what is meant. Choose more precise housing and urban-planning vocabulary, check spelling carefully, and learn common word combinations so your ideas sound clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example beginning “if a ten floors apartment…” and a contrast introduced by “although.” However, errors occur frequently, and some complex structures are difficult to follow. Examples include “tall building requires less space and allow,” where the subject and verbs do not agree, and “Due to living together with many families it's creates,” which has an incorrect clause structure. There are also problems with articles, plurals, and verb forms, as in “a ten floors apartment will build.” Practise forming accurate conditional sentences and clauses of cause and contrast, and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries. Greater control of these patterns would make your reasoning easier to understand.
