Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is more convenient to provide a home to more people in big cities by making tall apartment buildings. I completely agree with this view, because living in an apartment will lower the cost of living, and it will also help authorities to provide security to everyone.

To begin with, constructing skyscraper buildings for people in big city could minimise the rent which they would pay to the owner, who cannot afford to purchase their own apartment. Because in big cities it becomes very complicated to rent out a big home on a limited budget, especially in city centres. For example, the New York City metropolitan area has a population of over 20 million, so it becomes impossible to own or rent a home because of inflation. That's why people prefer to live in an apartment. In my opinion, it is convenient to maintain small homes for people who are working in private firms and have lower pay scales rather than big ones.

Furthermore, high-rise buildings occupy less space than a housing scheme, and it will facilitate the authorities providing security to every household who is living in the building. In Lahore there are Pakistan housing authority apartments consisting of 5 buildings, and each building consists of 20 houses with outer walls around which this could be considered more secure as compared to the Defence housing authority, which has hundreds of single-storey houses and can be considered as an example. My view on this point is that apartment systems are more appropriate for two-parent families.

In conclusion, construction of tall suite buildings becomes essential to provide homes to families who have low income and nuclear families who want a secure place to live in metropolitan cities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that tall apartment buildings are a good way to house people in large cities. You give two relevant reasons—lower housing costs and improved security—and include examples from New York and Lahore. However, some points are not fully explained or precisely connected to the claim that high-rise construction is the best way to provide enough homes. For instance, the New York example mentions inflation and difficulty renting, but does not show how apartment blocks would increase the supply or reduce costs. The comparison between Lahore developments also needs clearer evidence. Develop each reason with a direct explanation of how it addresses housing shortages, and acknowledge a limitation or alternative to make your argument more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “Furthermore,” and a conclusion. The main ideas are generally easy to follow, and the examples are placed alongside the points they are intended to support. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger progression associated with the next level. However, links within paragraphs are occasionally mechanical or unclear. The sentence beginning “Because in big cities…” is a fragment, and “which has hundreds of single-storey houses” makes the comparison with the Lahore apartments difficult to track. Use complete sentences and clearer referencing, and make the relationship between each example and its supporting claim explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “metropolitan cities,” “high-rise buildings,” “limited budget,” and “single-storey houses.” These choices help communicate your main points, and attempts at more specific language are evident. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, though: “provide a home to more people” is less natural than “house more people,” while “tall suite buildings” does not clearly describe apartment blocks. “Maintain small homes” also does not express the intended idea of providing or building them. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Aim for natural collocations and check that each key term accurately names the housing type or action you mean.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “who,” and “which.” Most of the argument remains understandable, and the errors do not generally obstruct communication. Some grammatical problems are noticeable, however. “Constructing skyscraper buildings for people in big city” has number and article problems, and “Because in big cities…” is an incomplete sentence. In “it will facilitate the authorities providing security,” the verb pattern is not well controlled; a clearer structure would be “it will enable authorities to provide security.” There are also agreement and reference issues in longer sentences, such as “each building consists of 20 houses … which this could be considered.” Practise accurate sentence boundaries and review articles, plurals, and verb patterns.
