IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Constructing numerous tall apartment buildings is good for large cities. I disagree with this view because tall buildings create congested blocks, which are unbearable for people to live in.
In my opinion, apartments are so small and are only for a few family members because most blocks in cities consist of 2 rooms and a small sitting area. Moreover, tall buildings also look congested and it's not feasible for older people compared to houses, which contain more space. Large houses with single story must be build to live in the cities. Because in large homes, a lot of space is available for any activity such as play as well as gathering for family and friends.
However, tall building might be good from people procpective. Because in cities people came from diverse backgrounds. So it's very difficult to build hones for every family. Furthermore, apartments can be used by working individuals and single people.
In conclusion, large houses is very comfortable to life but very expensive whereas tall blocks are small but cheaply available for rent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You give a clear overall disagreement and offer relevant points about space, comfort, affordability, and the needs of single or working people. However, the response addresses the question only partially: the claim that tall blocks are the “best way” to provide enough homes is not examined in depth, and the reasons are mostly asserted rather than explained or supported with examples. For instance, you say apartments are small and houses offer room for activities, but do not show how this affects housing supply or compare the number of homes each option can provide. The brief concession about apartments also leaves your position less fully argued. The response is 75 words below the required minimum, limiting the development of your ideas. Extend each main point with explanation and a relevant example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your response has a recognisable structure: an opening position, a paragraph presenting your reasons, a concession, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal these stages. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear or repetitive. Several sentences begin with “Because,” creating fragments and making the relationship between ideas less smooth; for example, “Because in large homes, a lot of space is available” does not connect grammatically to the preceding sentence. The conclusion introduces the contrast between comfort and cost but does not clearly resolve your argument about the best way to provide enough homes. Use complete sentences, connect each supporting explanation directly to its main point, and make the conclusion restate your position more explicitly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the general topic, including “congested,” “diverse backgrounds,” “available for rent,” and “expensive.” There are also attempts to express distinctions between housing types and residents’ needs. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which can make meaning less clear. Examples include “congested blocks” for crowded living conditions, “build hones,” and “people procpective.” Repetition of “large,” “tall,” “buildings,” and “houses” also restricts precision. Aim to use more accurate housing-related phrases, such as “high-density housing,” “residential space,” and “accommodate households,” while checking spelling and choosing natural collocations. This would make your comparisons clearer and more appropriate for an academic essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “houses, which contain more space” and a contrast introduced by “whereas.” Nevertheless, errors occur frequently, and some attempted complex sentences are faulty. For example, “Because in large homes, a lot of space is available” is a sentence fragment, while “Large houses with single story must be build” has problems with article use, agreement, and passive verb form. There are also errors in “apartments are so small and are only for a few family members” and “large houses is very comfortable to life.” These patterns sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to follow. Practise complete clauses, subject–verb agreement, articles, and passive forms, then proofread each sentence for grammatical completeness.
