Student answer (Band 6.0)

The optimal way to provide sufficient housing in huge cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

I agree that increase in population in big cities will definitely cause housing crisis and building tall apartments is the best solution. We should also consider expansion of the city to provide more homes.

Building tall buildings will provide housing to more number of people is a small area compared to individual houses. Usually people move to large cities for better job opportunities and they perfer to settle there with their families and it is really hard to find housing so tall apartments can provide sustantial housing for more people. Cities like Mumbai which are surrounded by sea cannot expand the city further and its really expensive to buy an individual home in mumbai.

The city is filled with tall apartments, most prefer to live in these apartments so the can have free space compared to individual houses.

In contrast, cities like Hyderabad and Bangaluru have expanded their cities towards the outer ring road. Even with the cities expansion it is hard to provide housing to many people. The amount of people increases who come to the cities for better living, in addition, more people prefer to live around their companies or officies, where the density of population increases so tall apartments are definitely needed even with the expansion of the cities.

To conclude, i definitely agree that building tall apartments is the best way to provide enough homes in large cities. which can accomodate more people compared to individual houses as they occupy more land.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that tall apartments are the best way to provide homes, while also recognising city expansion as a complementary approach. The examples of Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru are relevant, and the Mumbai example supports your point about geographical limits on expansion. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. For instance, you mention that apartments allow more people to live near jobs, but do not explain in detail how this makes them preferable to other housing strategies. The discussion of expansion also needs a clearer comparison with apartment construction. To strengthen the response, explain the advantages and limitations of each approach and support the examples with more specific reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The contrast between Mumbai and cities that have expanded gives the discussion a useful organising principle, and phrases such as “In contrast” and “To conclude” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The first body paragraph moves from population growth to job opportunities, housing costs and free space without consistently showing how each point supports the main claim. The sentence beginning “Building tall buildings will provide housing…” is also difficult to follow because its comparison is incomplete. Improve progression by giving each paragraph one main claim, then explaining and illustrating it before moving to the next point; use referencing that makes clear what “these apartments” and “the city” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “housing crisis,” “population density,” “job opportunities” and “individual houses,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as describing Mumbai as “surrounded by sea.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “provide housing to more number of people” is awkward, and “sustantial housing” does not express the intended idea naturally. Spelling errors such as “perfer,” “officies” and “accomodate” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing repeated phrases such as “tall apartments” with suitable alternatives, where the meaning remains clear, would also broaden your vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “Cities like Mumbai which are surrounded by sea” and a contrastive sentence beginning “Even with the cities expansion.” The main argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I agree that increase in population” needs an article, while “Building tall buildings will provide housing to more number of people is a small area” combines structures in a way that makes the relationship between ideas unclear. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and capitalisation, as in “To conclude, i definitely agree…” followed by a lower-case “which.” To improve, check articles and agreement, and make sure each sentence has a complete, clearly connected main clause.
