Student answer (Band 6.0)
As city populations grow rapidly, construct modern high-rise buildings is seen as a good way to solve housing shortages. I fully agree with this idea because tall buildings save space and can accommodate thousands of people in one area.
In larger cities the piece of land is quite expensive and difficult to find . if we built small single story houses on them a lot of space will be wasted .It would be a quite smart move to build high rise building flats ,in this way space is more properly managed and instead of one family many families can have their own homes on that small piece of land. For example,if we construct a small single story house on a land of size 40 X 80 only one or two families can live there but what if we built a high-rise building multiple families would have their homes on that land.
Furthermore ,high rise apartment improve access to basic public facilities. When thousand of people live in one central location providing basic public facilities like water ,electricity and waste management become much simpler. As a result residents can easily access metro and market on walking distance reducing traffic and transport cost.
In conclusion, constructing high-rise apartment buildings offers the most practical approach to managing urban population growth. By maximizing limited land space and making public services significantly easier to supply, vertical housing effectively solves severe housing shortages. Therefore, major metropolitan areas should be prioritizing tall residential developments to ensure affordable and accessible housing

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the opening: you fully agree that high-rise housing is an effective response to urban shortages. You give two relevant reasons—using scarce land efficiently and making public services easier to provide—and the land-size example helps illustrate the first. The conclusion also restates your view and links it to affordability and access. However, the second reason is asserted more than developed: explain more specifically how density improves the provision of services, and support the claim about affordability with an example or explanation. The response addresses the task and has a clear line of argument, but some ideas remain general or unevenly supported. Extending both reasons with precise evidence would make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “As a result,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. The example about building on a 40-by-80 plot also belongs logically with the land-efficiency point. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. The long sentence beginning “For example” repeats the preceding point, while the shift from public facilities to metro access and transport costs could be explained more explicitly. Improve paragraph flow by developing each main idea in a clear sequence—claim, explanation, example—and use referencing and transitions that show how each detail supports the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “housing shortages,” “high-rise buildings,” “public facilities,” “waste management,” and “metropolitan areas.” These choices communicate the subject clearly, and phrases such as “maximizing limited land space” show an attempt to use more precise language. However, several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems limit accuracy: “piece of land” is repeated, “on walking distance” is unnatural, and “high rise apartment” is not consistently formed as a compound modifier. Some wording is also vague, such as “a quite smart move” and “basic public facilities.” Aim for more natural collocations and greater variety, for example, “within walking distance” and “essential infrastructure.” Proofreading compound forms and avoiding repeated general terms would strengthen lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including a conditional example (“if we built…”) and a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “When thousand of people live…”. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation remain. For example, “As city populations grow rapidly, construct…” needs a grammatical subject and verb form, while “When thousand of people live” requires plural agreement. The sentence beginning “For example” also becomes a run-on, and several sentence openings and boundaries are not punctuated consistently. Work on forming complete clauses, checking singular and plural subjects, and separating long sentences. More accurate control of these patterns, alongside your attempts at complex structures, would improve clarity.
