The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

As the population of large cities continues to grow, providing enough housing has become a major challenge. Some people believe that constructing tall apartment buildings is the best solution. I partly agree with this view because high-rise buildings can accommodate many people in limited areas, but I believe that they should be combined with other types of housing.

One major advantage of tall apartment blocks is that they make efficient use of limited land. In large cities, land is often expensive and difficult to obtain. Instead of spreading houses across large areas, high-rise buildings can provide hundreds of homes on a relatively small piece of land. This can also help reduce urban expansion and allow more people to live close to workplaces, schools and public transport. For example, a single high-rise complex can accommodate far more families than the same area of land covered by individual houses. Most of the countries are now making tall buildings more because, it is saving space of the land as well as they are making good amount of money from it.

In conclusion, tall apartment blocks are an effective way to provide a large number of homes where land is limited, and I agree that they should play an important role in solving urban housing shortages. Nevertheless, I do not believe they are the best solution on their own. A combination of different housing types and better urban planning would be more effective in the long term. In future there will be way more taller buildings we cant even imagine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you partly agree that tall blocks help, but argue they should be combined with other housing and planning. You explain the land-efficiency benefit and support it with a comparison between a high-rise complex and individual houses, so the response addresses the central question. However, the discussion is uneven: the case for high-rise housing is developed, while the reasons it is not the best solution alone are only briefly stated in the conclusion. The claim that countries build tall buildings to make money is also broad and not clearly linked to whether this is the best way to provide homes. Develop a specific limitation of high-rise living and explain how an alternative housing type could address it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction states your position, the main paragraph explains a benefit, and the conclusion restates your view and proposes a broader approach. Linking phrases such as “One major advantage” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. This logical arrangement is a strength. However, the body paragraph moves from land efficiency to a general claim about countries and profit without a clear transition or explanation, and the conclusion introduces future tall buildings without developing that point. To make progression more complete, give the opposing consideration its own paragraph and use references and transitions to show how each point supports your partly agreeing position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “high-rise buildings,” “limited land,” “urban expansion,” and “housing shortages.” These expressions communicate the main ideas clearly, and there is some variation in how you refer to the buildings and the housing problem. At times, however, word choice and collocation are imprecise, particularly in “saving space of the land,” “making good amount of money,” and “way more taller buildings.” The phrase “Most of the countries” is also an awkward generalisation. Aim for more natural academic combinations and precise wording—for example, describe land as being used efficiently and specify who earns revenue and how. This would make your argument sound more controlled and formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear conditional-style comparison and a subordinate clause in “because high-rise buildings can accommodate many people in limited areas.” Most sentences are understandable, and the opening and much of the main paragraph show sound control. Some errors remain, especially in the sentence beginning “Most of the countries,” where the clause structure and punctuation are faulty, and in “In future there will be way more taller buildings we cant even imagine,” which joins ideas without appropriate punctuation and has an incorrect comparative form. Practise building longer sentences with clear clause boundaries, and check articles, agreement, and punctuation before finishing.
