Student answer (Band 6.0)

The superior way of providing sufficient homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks. I agree with this statement as tall apartment blocks could be the proper solution by providing living space for a large amounts of people without consuming too much spaces.

In contemporary society, most of the big cities do not have sufficient homes to meet the required demand. Every year residents are increasing in those cities while governments are failing to meet the actual demand. Lack of spaces to build more homes is one of the major causes of this failure. However, building tall apartment blocks would not consume more spaces while that would provide living places to hundreds of families. In other words, several families could be served at a limited space instead of building separete homes for them. For instance, a 30 storyed building with the capability of serving four families per floor can serve 120 families together while consuming the samilar amount of spaces.

Although, critics contend that extending the area of large cities could be better as residents will keep increasing every year. However, this solution is not appropriate as cities might not be extended for multiple times. Consequences of this approach could get worse as extending cities and building homes for existing and upcoming residents may result in waste of spaces and inefficiency. Therefore, a more practical approach might be to build several tall apartment blocks for the residents initially. This will result in saving spaces in large cities as well as fulfilling the demand of homes.

To conclude, building tall apartment blocks would be the perfect step to do efficient utilization of large cities along with meeting the demand of homes for the residents.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes, and you return to this view in the conclusion. You give relevant reasons, especially limited land and the capacity of a high-rise building, and the example of 30 floors serving 120 families helps make the argument concrete. You also address an alternative—expanding city boundaries—and explain why you consider it less practical. This covers the task well, with some development beyond a simple assertion. To strengthen the response further, explain the drawbacks of expansion more precisely and develop the benefits of high-rise housing beyond land efficiency, for example by considering access to transport or services. Some claims, such as cities being unable to expand repeatedly, need clearer support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction stating your position, a paragraph explaining the housing shortage, a paragraph considering an alternative, and a conclusion. The progression from the problem to your proposed solution is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In other words,” “For instance,” and “Therefore” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some cohesion is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “However” and “Therefore,” and the contrast paragraph begins with “Although” but then uses “However,” making the relationship less smooth. Some references are also unclear, as in “while that would provide living places,” where “that” does not point cleanly to the building approach. Use a wider range of transitions and make links between sentences more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “apartment blocks,” “residents,” “demand,” and “utilization,” and phrases such as “limited space” help communicate the central argument. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “contemporary society” and “practical approach.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “a large amounts of people,” “living places,” and “the required demand.” Spelling errors such as “separete,” “storyed,” and “samilar” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Repetition of “spaces,” “homes,” and “residents” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your meaning more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “as,” and “although,” and your meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Every year residents are increasing in those cities while governments are failing to meet the actual demand.” However, there are some errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “a large amounts” has mismatched article and number, while “a 30 storyed building … can serve 120 families” needs more accurate grammatical forms. The opening of the third paragraph, “Although, critics contend… However,” also creates a faulty connection between clauses. Review subject–verb agreement, countable nouns, and punctuation around subordinate clauses, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
