IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many are of the opinion that the most convenient way of providing shelter in the urban areas is to build tall apartment blocks. I completely agree with this viewpoint because such initiatives will help to provide affordable homes and ensure an organized environmental setting.
To begin with, erecting tall apartment flats help to provide affordable homes for low-income families. Instead of struggling to pay for houses that might not be within their earnings, families can reside in these tall buildings which are meant to be cheaper thereby helping them to save and afford other needs like education, accessing good healthcare and eating healthy.
Furthermore, building tall apartment blocks help to have an organized environmental setting. Unlike in the rural areas where houses are scattered, cities will have a well structurized view, creating more space for bigger highways and building of other public facilities. For instance, in a city where houses are built by every family will definitely be congested and this will not only affect their road networks but also create a challenging environmental issue.
In conclusion, I firmly maintain that the most efficient way of providing homes for families in the cities is by building residential skyscrapers which will ensure that affordable homes are provided and organized environmental setting is achieved

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you completely agree that tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide homes. You give two relevant reasons—affordability and more organised use of urban space—and include a brief example about congestion and road networks. However, the reasons are not developed equally: the affordability point would benefit from explaining why high-rise construction lowers costs, while the environmental point needs a clearer link between taller buildings and the space saved. The example is hypothetical and its wording makes the situation difficult to follow. The response also falls 38 words short of the required minimum, so there is limited room to explain and support your ideas fully. Add specific explanation or a concrete example for each main point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted by “To begin with” and “Furthermore,” and a conclusion that restates your position. The ideas generally progress in a logical order, and linking phrases such as “For instance” help introduce support. This meets the expected level of coherent organisation. To make the progression more fluent, clarify the relationship between the example and your claim: “a city where houses are built by every family” is not clearly connected to the contrast with scattered rural housing. Some links also feel formulaic, and the conclusion repeats the introduction’s two benefits rather than drawing the argument together. Develop each paragraph around one clearly explained claim and use referencing that makes the connections explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “low-income families,” “public facilities,” “congested,” and “road networks.” These choices make your main points understandable, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “environmental setting.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “well structurized view” is not idiomatic, and “accessing good healthcare” is awkward in this context. “Tall apartment flats” is also redundant, while “residential skyscrapers” may overstate the type of housing being discussed. Aim for natural, precise combinations rather than formal-sounding phrases. For example, describe the result as a “well-planned urban landscape” and refer consistently to “high-rise apartment buildings.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “because such initiatives will help…” and a comparison beginning “Unlike in the rural areas…”. Most of the meaning remains clear, which is a strength. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement: “erecting tall apartment flats help” and “building tall apartment blocks help” should use “helps.” The sentence beginning “Unlike in the rural areas” also has an unclear comparison, and “a city where houses are built by every family will definitely be congested” needs a more precise grammatical construction. Review agreement with gerund subjects and check that comparisons clearly match the things being compared. More accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
