Student answer (Band 5.0)

I don't agree that the best way to provide enough housing for people in big cities is by buildimg tall apartment blocks. Tall building might seems the best solution since you don't take much space in the gound and only take space in the are, but it could prevent the sunlight from the streets. The area will be very crowded du to the number of people leaving and we will see alot of jams and alot of polution. As you can see in china cities were they have this kind of housing, the cities are very crowded all the time. Another example is Newyork, which you can find it very crowded all the year around and also very nonsuitable for families to live in. This solutions also might cause an increase of pricing for renting and buying for the apartment. The seller will make use of the people and provide a tiny apartment for a very expesive price. I belive the best solution is extending the cities and provide all living nesessties around all the city. By soing this people will plenty of space to live in, and they will find there all needs around them. Investing in tall apartment block might seems better, but having nebouherhoods with plenty of space it more worth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you disagree that tall apartment blocks are the best solution, and you offer alternatives such as extending cities and providing services across them. You also give relevant reasons, including crowding, traffic, pollution and affordability. However, these points are mostly asserted rather than explained, and the examples of China and New York are broad generalisations rather than specific support. The response also does not fully develop how your proposed alternative would provide enough homes or address the needs of large cities. The required minimum length is not met, which limits the opportunity to develop your argument. Explain each main reason with a concrete example and show how your alternative would work in practice.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable progression: it states a disagreement, lists disadvantages of tall buildings, and then presents an alternative. Linking phrases such as “Another example” and “By doing this” help signal relationships between ideas. However, the writing is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the shift from criticism to the proposed solution is not clearly marked. Several points are also joined in a list-like way, with repeated “and” and “also,” rather than being grouped and developed. References such as “This solutions” and “By soing this” make connections less clear. Use separate paragraphs for your position and reasons, then your alternative, and make each paragraph follow one central idea with clearer links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including “apartment blocks,” “crowded,” “sunlight,” “renting,” and “neighbourhoods.” Some choices, however, are imprecise or unnatural, and spelling errors are noticeable: “polution,” “expesive,” “nesessties,” and “nebouherhoods.” Phrases such as “the people leaving” appear to mean people living there, while “very nonsuitable” is not a natural expression. Repetition of “crowded,” “space,” and “people” also limits the range. Aim for accurate collocations and more precise terms, such as “residents,” “traffic congestion,” and “affordable housing.” Proofreading spelling and checking whether each word expresses your intended meaning would make the argument easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentence forms, for example the sentence beginning “Tall building might seems the best solution since…,” and you use a conditional idea in “The seller will make use of the people.” However, the range is limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes making the reader pause. Examples include “by buildimg” instead of a gerund after “by,” “might seems” instead of “might seem,” and “This solutions” instead of a plural subject with matching demonstrative. There are also problems with articles and sentence construction, as in “in the are” and “which you can find it very crowded.” Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses using “because,” “although,” and “which.” Check subject–verb agreement and verb forms during revision.
