Student answer (Band 6.0)

Tall buildings can accomodate a higher number of apartments to cater for the continously increasing residential requirement in the main cities. The large cities are focusing more on creating more houses in less space to meet the need of more number of houses by using less space.

I agree, that with the increasing population and the preference of the big cities by most of the families, government has to work out on the ways to accomodate people along with the maintenance of the infrastructure of the cities and preservation of the natural habitat. If more villas or houses are built, more space will be needed. Whereas, the building can have a huge number of apartments by taking only limited space. So, instead of increasing the area to build houses, higher number of floors are constructed and the aparments are made available to the people at relatively cheaper price due to shared ameneties.

This comes with some demerits as well. Some of the shared facilities do not come with the privacy which a family can enjoy at home. For example, a personal swimming pool or gymnasium has more privacy as compared to the shared ones. Likewise, a personal garden will always hold a different place as compared to the one which 20 or 50 families need to share. You can grow the vegetables and fruits of your own choice in personal lawn but this is not doable when you have to take multiple families on the same page.

Since everything has pros and cons, the useful thing about the apartments is that certain facilities when shared will need less maintenance charges, less resources and increase in socialization. Children can find alot of other kids of same age and make friends. In case of any emergency, you can end up having a lot of people around to help. However, all this also depends on the kind of people living nearby as most of the families living in apartments have culturay diverse background and values.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that tall apartment blocks are an effective way to provide homes, and you support this with points about using less land, shared facilities, affordability and social contact. You also acknowledge disadvantages, such as reduced privacy, so the response addresses the question rather than presenting only one side. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others. The land-use argument is relevant but could be supported with a concrete example of how vertical development protects open space or accommodates more residents. The discussion of cultural diversity at the end is introduced without explaining its effect on apartment living, so its relevance to your position remains unclear. Develop these points and connect each example more directly to your conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall structure: it introduces the issue, presents reasons for agreement, considers disadvantages, and then returns to benefits. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “This comes with some demerits as well” and “However” guide the reader through the contrast. At times, though, connections are mechanical or the progression within a paragraph is not fully controlled. The final paragraph moves from maintenance and socialisation to emergency help, then to cultural diversity, without clearly showing how the last point supports the argument. Some references, such as “all this,” are broad and could be made more precise. Use clearer topic sentences and explain the relationship between each supporting point and the main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “residential requirement,” “preservation of the natural habitat,” “shared facilities,” and “maintenance charges.” These choices allow you to discuss both the practical benefits and personal drawbacks of apartment living. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “work out on the ways,” “take multiple families on the same page,” and “increasing residential requirement.” Spelling errors, including “accomodate,” “continously,” “aparments,” and “culturay,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, describe “meeting housing demand” and “finding common ground” rather than translating expressions literally. This would make your ideas more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If more villas or houses are built, more space will be needed” and contrastive clauses beginning with “Whereas” and “However.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. For example, the comma in “I agree, that” is unnecessary, and “the building can have a huge number of apartments” has an unclear singular subject. In “the useful thing about the apartments is that certain facilities when shared will need less maintenance charges,” the clause structure is difficult to follow. Review sentence boundaries, articles, and agreement, and make sure each clause has a clear subject and verb. More consistently controlled complex sentences would strengthen the response.
