Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, many people argue that the suitable path to provide sufficient homes to people in big cities is to construct taller apartmental blocks. I strongly agree with this statement because cities are heavily crowded, and accommodating a large number of people requires the construction of large apartment buildings so that they can live in an urban city with all facilities and employment opportunities.

Nowadays, there is a huge population rise in every country, especially in larger cities. This has created many problems for the authority, such as providing homes to people in developed areas. Therefore, the best possible way is to construct double- or triple-story residential colonies. In this way, many people will be given homes with all the basic facilities, like shopping malls, markets, and even bigger parks. For example, the Nigerian government has started building several six-floor buildings to give shelter to homeless people.

Similarly, providing homes to people will solve many problems for people with traveling concerns. Many businessmen and office workers travel from bigger cities to their homeland in villages. They can't live there because they have no homes to stay in. Hence, constructing tall apartment blocks will resolve these issues. They will enjoy the life of big cities while staying there. Moreover, urban areas have more employment opportunities; many people migrate from their villages to cities. Therefore, it is a need to develop homes to shelter them.

In conclusion, I believe constructing tall apartment blocks will help many people to live and enjoy city life with all facilities and will also give better job options to earn.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that tall apartment blocks can provide homes in crowded cities. You also give relevant reasons, including population growth, access to facilities and employment, and an example of Nigerian construction. However, the response does not fully develop the central claim that building upwards is the best way to provide enough homes. The point about workers travelling from cities to their villages is difficult to follow and does not clearly show how apartment blocks solve the housing shortage. The example is also brief and not explained in detail. To strengthen the response, explain how high-rise housing accommodates more residents on limited land and support each main reason with a clearer example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Therefore,” “Similarly,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In particular, the discussion of businessmen and office workers travelling to their “homeland in villages” does not follow clearly from the point about housing, and “Hence” does not make the solution evident. The conclusion also repeats the main claim without drawing together the reasons. Improve progression by giving each paragraph one focused argument and using explicit explanations to connect evidence to your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “population rise,” “residential colonies,” “employment opportunities,” and “migrate.” These choices make the subject clear, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “apartmental blocks,” “the suitable path,” and “bigger cities” do not express your ideas as naturally as standard housing vocabulary would. “Double- or triple-story” also does not clearly convey the tall apartment blocks in the prompt. Aim for more precise collocations and avoid repeating general words such as “people,” “homes,” and “cities.” The suggestions below offer alternatives that better fit an academic essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “such as,” and “while.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical choices are less controlled, however. In “the suitable path to provide sufficient homes to people,” the infinitive construction is awkward, while “many people will be given homes” uses a passive form that makes the agent and process vague. The sentence beginning “Many businessmen and office workers travel…” is also difficult to interpret because the relationship between travelling, living in villages, and lacking homes is not clearly expressed. Continue practising complex sentences, checking that each clause has a clear relationship to the main point and that pronouns have clear references.
