Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely believed that constructing high-rise buildings is the most optimal solution to provide sufficient homes in large cities. I agree because high rise apartments save land as many people live in one building. It also brings a close-packed community of people socializing with each other. To begin with, I believe that it is important to save land that could be used for other facilities. We only have limited amount of land on earth that is solid for constructing and if everyone built their one-story apartments, we would be left with little to no facilities. For Instance, recently in Canada, a flat apartment was demolished and replaced with a park that many children would be amused to visit facing a small coffee and pastry shop for adults to enjoy. Secondly, one of the crucial impacts on people living in high stories is how they can become included in a friendly loving community. It gives people a chance to socialize with others who might share similar experiences in life, either in school, college or through work experience. For example, this can really benefit older generations who are more prone to being depressed after retirement since they are bored most of the time and have a small social circle. It could also benefit teenagers who are introverted because they might find young adults with similar preferences. To conclude, I agree that building multiple stories is beneficial to keep up with the number of properties need to be built as they save land for other facilities in which we are in need of and to bring communities closer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that high-rise housing is beneficial, and you give two relevant reasons—saving land and encouraging social contact. The examples about replacing a flat with a park and supporting older people and introverted teenagers help make the discussion concrete. This meets the task well, but the development is uneven. The land-use point would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how apartment blocks provide more homes than other housing forms; the Canada example is also difficult to connect to that claim. The community argument is more fully illustrated, though it assumes residents will socialise without explaining how building design or shared spaces enable this. Develop these links and acknowledge a limitation or alternative to make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Secondly,” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. Some cohesion is less controlled, however. The first example about a demolished flat, a park and a coffee shop is not clearly linked to the claim about saving land, so the reader has to infer the connection. In the final sentence, “as they save land … and to bring communities closer” combines ideas in an awkward parallel structure. Use linking phrases to explain cause and effect, and make pronoun references and sentence relationships explicit rather than relying mainly on sequencing markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range to discuss housing and social effects, including “high-rise buildings,” “limited amount of land,” “social circle,” and “introverted.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more specific vocabulary are evident. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, though: “the most optimal solution” is redundant, “high stories” is not the usual term for tall buildings, and “properties need to be built” does not express the intended idea naturally. “Solid for constructing” and “facing a small coffee and pastry shop” are also unclear. Aim for precise, conventional collocations and check word forms and spelling, including the capitalisation of “for instance.” This would make the argument sound more fluent and exact without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional sentence (“if everyone built their one-story apartments, we would be left…”) and a relative clause (“people who might share similar experiences”). Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. For example, “We only have limited amount of land” needs an article before “limited amount,” while “the number of properties need to be built” has an incorrect clause structure; use “the number of properties that need to be built.” In “It also brings a close-packed community,” the pronoun’s reference is unclear and the sentence structure does not express the intended relationship accurately. Review articles, agreement and clause construction, and vary sentence patterns while keeping them controlled.
