The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued that the best approach in providing sufficient homes in urban areas is to construct residential high-rise buildings. While I acknowledge that this could result to a possible reduction of natural green spaces, I completely agree that tall apartments are necessary to provide homes because of its affordability and effect in the economy.
Firstly, a construction of multi-story apartment allows people to have accommodation and afford housing units. This is beneficial for the increasing number of people moving to the city since buying and owning house and lot can be very expensive in the metropolis. For instance, a family that just relocated to the city would look for a cheaper unit to rent due to the high living cost. As a result, it would help lessen the financial burden of new and incoming settlers in the metro.
Secondly, these apartment blocks help boost the region's economic growth. Local businesses rely most from these buildings as residents are expected to be the biggest portion of their customers. Job opportunities will also thrive due to the construction activities and booming commercial sectors. To illustrate, residents will opt to buy and eat their meals at an eatery near their condominium as it offers home-cooked dishes at an affordable price.
In conclusion, although multi-dwelling units might potentially have its drawbacks, I believe that they are still the best method to home the rising number of people in the city as it helps them to cope with financial issues and at the same time support local businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear throughout: you agree that high-rise apartments are the best way to provide homes, and you give two relevant reasons—housing affordability and economic benefits. The examples about a newly relocated family and residents supporting nearby eateries help connect these points to city life. This covers the task well, but the support is unevenly developed: the affordability paragraph explains the pressure on newcomers, while the economic paragraph makes broader claims about growth and jobs without showing how these effects compare with other housing approaches. The brief concession about losing green space is also not developed. To strengthen the response, explain why high-rise construction is preferable to alternatives and extend the concession before reaffirming your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is easy to follow, with signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion,” while “For instance” and “To illustrate” introduce examples appropriately. This gives the essay a logical progression. Some links between claims could be more explicit, however: the move from apartment residents to local business growth, for example, would benefit from a clearer explanation of the economic mechanism. The conclusion also repeats the main reasons rather than drawing together the argument. Use a few more precise links between each claim and its consequence, while keeping the clear paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “residential high-rise buildings,” “financial burden,” “economic growth,” and “construction activities.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several collocations and word choices are imprecise, such as “result to a possible reduction,” “effect in the economy,” “rely most from,” and “home the rising number of people.” “A construction of multi-story apartment” is also awkwardly formed. These errors do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Focus on learning common word partnerships for housing and urban development, and check whether each verb takes the preposition you have used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession clause beginning “While I acknowledge…” and a conditional example beginning “since buying and owning…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and paragraph-level control is generally steady. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and plural forms: “a construction of multi-story apartment” needs a more accurate article and noun form, while “because of its affordability” does not agree with the plural “tall apartments.” In “multi-dwelling units might potentially have its drawbacks,” the pronoun also needs to agree with the plural subject. Review these patterns and vary your complex structures further; more consistently accurate sentences would improve control.
