Student answer (Band 6.0)
I largely agree that the most effective way to provide enough housing in large cities is to construct tall apartment buildings because they can provide homes to many people in one area and the costs per unit while building the apartment is less than individual houses.
The main advantage of building tall apartment is they reduce the problem of housing shortages to a large extent. Apartment blocks provides accommodation to a substantial number of people in one area. This is particularly beneficial in cities, such as Mumbai and Delhi which is densely populated and have less space with higher land prices.
Another significant benefit of apartment blocks is that they are considerably cheaper then the costs for detached houses. All the necessary expenses like maintenance, infrastructure such as water and electricity bills can be shared among residents which reduces overall costs to a large extent. It will be less stressful for the low income families as they do not have to bear all the necessary expenses by them selves which they have to do while building their houses from scratch. As a result, government should take initiative in building high rise buildings as it will benefit people from low-income families who cannot afford to buy a detached house. However, they should be planned properly in order to provide individuals with all the facility such as public transport and low costs then individual houses.
In conclusion, I largely agree that building high rise apartment is the most effective solution to reduce housing shortages. They make efficient use of land and are generally cheaper than building a detached house. However, proper planning should be required in order to ensure a high quality of life for residents,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the opening: you largely agree that tall apartment buildings are an effective response to urban housing shortages. You give two relevant reasons—accommodating many people on limited land and sharing costs—and the references to Mumbai and Delhi help illustrate the pressure on space. The response also recognises a qualification by noting that high-rise housing needs proper planning. However, the cost argument is developed more fully than the first reason, and the discussion of shared maintenance and utility expenses does not explain in detail how construction itself becomes cheaper per home. The point about transport and facilities is also introduced briefly rather than supported. Develop each reason with a specific example or clearer explanation to make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body sections present supporting reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is easy to follow, and phrases such as “Another significant benefit” and “As a result” make the relationship between ideas clear. This organisation is effective, while some linking remains a little mechanical and the second body paragraph carries several points at once: shared expenses, low-income families, government action, and planning. The reference “they” in “However, they should be planned properly” could also be clearer about whether it refers to apartment blocks or government initiatives. Separate the planning point or connect it more explicitly, and use a wider variety of transitions and referencing to make progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of housing and urban-development vocabulary, including “housing shortages,” “densely populated,” “land prices,” “detached houses,” and “low-income families.” These choices communicate the main ideas and show some ability to use topic-specific language. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “building tall apartment,” “cheaper then the costs,” and “all the facility.” “Necessary expenses” and “to a large extent” are also repeated, which limits precision. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check whether a noun should be singular or plural in each phrase. More precise expressions for construction costs, shared services, and access to amenities would make the argument sound more natural and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because,” a relative clause beginning “which,” and a result structure with “As a result.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “Apartment blocks provides” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “cities … which is densely populated” does not agree with the plural noun. Articles and plural forms also need attention in “building tall apartment” and “all the facility.” The final sentence ends with a comma rather than a full stop, and “proper planning should be required” is an awkward passive construction. Practise checking agreement, articles, and sentence endings, and revise complex sentences to ensure each clause is complete and correctly formed.
