Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many large cities, the demand of housing is increasing because of population growth and urbanisation. Some people believe that constructing tall buildings is the best way to provide enough homes for residents. I largely agree with this view because high-rise building can accommodate more people and better use of limited land.
One major advantage of building tall apartment blocks is that they can provide accommodation for a large number of families in a small area. In crowded cities land is very expensive and available space is limited. Therefore, constructing high-rise buildings allows governments and private developers to build more homes without using large space of area. For instance, instead of building several small houses, developers can build one large apartment with many floors and provide facilities to the residents. This reduces the shortage of houses and make better use of land space.
Another benefit is that apartment buildings can be developed close to important facilities and public transport. Residents may have easier access to schools, hospitals, shopping malls, and work centers. This can reduce large journey hours and save both time and money. However, depending entirely on high-rise buildings can create problems such as overcrowding, traffic congestion and pressure on public services. In addition, some families prefer houses with private outdoor spaces. For this reasons, cities should be considered other options.
In the conclusion, I believe building tall apartment blocks is one of the most effective ways to provide sufficient housing in large cities because it saves land and accommodation many people. Nevertheless, living in own homes gives us much privacy and own space.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you largely agree that tall apartment blocks are an effective response to housing demand, and you give relevant reasons about accommodating more families on limited, expensive land and locating homes near services and transport. You also acknowledge drawbacks, including congestion, pressure on public services and some families’ preference for outdoor space, so the response addresses both the main claim and a qualification. However, the supporting ideas are not equally developed. The example about replacing several small houses with one apartment is general, and the benefits of proximity to facilities are asserted rather than illustrated. The conclusion also introduces privacy and personal space without explaining how these concerns affect your overall position. Develop each reason with a clearer example and connect the qualification more explicitly to your degree of agreement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons and a qualification, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “One major advantage,” “Another benefit,” and “However” help signal the direction of the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise. For example, “For this reasons, cities should be considered other options” does not clearly show who should consider the alternatives or how this follows from the preceding points. The final sentence about privacy also feels added rather than integrated into the conclusion. Use clearer referencing and make the relationship between each drawback and your recommendation explicit; this would make cohesion less mechanical and the progression more consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “population growth,” “urbanisation,” “high-rise buildings,” “public transport,” and “traffic congestion.” These choices make the subject clear, and terms such as “accommodation” and “facilities” show some attempt to vary expression. However, several word choices or combinations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “demand of housing,” “large space of area,” “large journey hours,” and “living in own homes” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There is also repetition of “buildings,” “homes,” and “space.” Aim to learn common collocations for housing and urban development, and check whether a phrase sounds natural in context. More precise wording would help you express the argument with greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“because of population growth and urbanisation”), a conditional structure (“depending entirely on high-rise buildings can create problems”), and a relative clause (“which can reduce…” is an option to develop this idea). Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “This reduces the shortage of houses and make better use” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “For this reasons” has a number agreement error. In the conclusion, “building tall apartment blocks … saves land and accommodation many people” has an incorrect verb pattern, and “living in own homes gives us” lacks a determiner. Review agreement, articles and verb patterns, and proofread longer sentences. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen an otherwise clear response.
