Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is thought that the most efficient way to provide enough homes in vast cities is to build apartment buildings. I strongly agree with this viewpoint, and in ensuing essay, I will present my point of view and tell why building apartment blocks can help prevent homelessness and reducing the cost of purchasing a house for a family.

The primary reason why I hold this viewpoint is that the percentage of homeless people in our country has risen a lot in the last decade, therefor, to counter this problem, building enough homes is vital. This is because when most people will have home of their own, there will be less people living on streets. For instance, the percentage of homeless individuals in Pakistan was around 11% in 2010, in contrast, this percentage has risen to 18%, at present. So, to improve our country's housing system, we have to take the initiative of building apartment blocks.

Another compelling reason is that with the increase in population in large cities, which in turn increase the demand in houses, price of a house has increased by a large margin. To get rid of this problem, apartments can be build because an apartment can house many families, rather than a single house which can only contain a single household. This can decrease the prices of houses, and prevent many families from living on streets. For example, the price of single story house in Islamabad is around 76 Lac Rupees, while the price of an apartment in Islamabad in approximately 25 Lac Rupees.

In conclusion, while homelessness and prices of houses have become a serious trouble for our country, this can be prevented by building strong and long-lasting apartment blocks. I firmly believe that by taking this initiative we can counter most of the problems our current housing system is facing.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction (“I strongly agree”) and remains consistent in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons: apartment construction could increase housing availability and offer a less expensive option than a detached house. The Islamabad price comparison also provides a concrete example. However, the response does not fully explain why tall apartment blocks are the best way to provide enough homes compared with alternatives, and the link between building apartments, reducing homelessness, and lowering house prices is asserted rather than demonstrated. The national homelessness figures are presented without context, and the first reason largely repeats the claim that more homes mean fewer people on the streets. Develop the reasoning and qualify or explain your examples to make the support more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “The primary reason,” “Another compelling reason,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical, and the reasoning within paragraphs could progress more clearly. In the first body paragraph, the homelessness statistic is followed by a general claim about building apartments, but the explanation of how this construction would address the problem remains brief. The second paragraph also moves quickly from population growth to house prices and then homelessness. Use clearer links between each claim and its consequence, and avoid repeating the same point about families living on the streets.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “homelessness,” “housing system,” “population,” and “demand,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “counter this problem” and “take the initiative.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “in ensuing essay,” “prevent homelessness and reducing,” “a serious trouble,” and “the price … in approximately.” “Percentage of homeless people” is also repeated, and “house” and “apartment” recur frequently. These choices limit precision and naturalness, even though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument. Aim for accurate collocations and vary key terms—for example, use “housing shortage,” “accommodation,” or “residential buildings” where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional sentence (“when most people will have home of their own”) and a relative clause beginning “which in turn…”. The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some errors affect accuracy. For example, “the percentage … has risen …, therefore” joins clauses incorrectly, while “which in turn increase” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “apartments can be build,” the verb form is incorrect, and “a house of their own” needs an article. The sentence about population growth and demand is also awkwardly constructed, making the relationship between its clauses less clear. Review clause boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
