IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The best way to provide enough homes in large cities is to build tall apartment blocks.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Nowadays, with the growing number of people, many people face a lot of difficulties in finding homes in large cities. Due to the large number of facilities, which are provided in large cities, mostly people prefer to live in cities. I totally agree with this because the best solution to overcome this problem is to build tall apartment blocks instead of homes. In this way, more people live in apartments instead of separate homes. Less space can be utilized for more people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

Your position is clear: “I totally agree,” and you give a relevant reason, namely that apartment blocks allow more people to live on less land. However, the response only begins to address the question. It does not explain why this is the best way to provide homes, develop the reason with an example, or consider any limitations or alternatives. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, so there is not enough material to fulfil the task or support your view. To improve, explain how high-rise housing increases capacity in crowded areas, add a specific example, and develop your argument across several paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The ideas are connected in a basic, understandable order: you introduce the housing problem, state your agreement, and give a reason. The phrase “In this way” links the proposed solution to its result. However, the response is a single short paragraph, with no developed progression from one supporting point to another. The opening repeats the idea of a growing population and difficulty finding homes without moving the argument forward, and “Due to” does not clearly connect the preference for city living to the claim about high-rise buildings. Use separate paragraphs for your position and supporting reasons, and make each link between cause, solution, and outcome explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the central topic, including “large cities,” “finding homes,” “apartment blocks,” and “space.” The meaning is generally clear, but the range is narrow and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. “A lot of difficulties” is vague, while “Less space can be utilized for more people” does not express the idea as naturally or precisely as it could. “Facilities” is also too general to explain why people choose cities. Build a more topic-specific range for housing and urban planning, such as housing demand, residential density, land use, and affordable accommodation, and use these terms in developed explanations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

Your sentences are mostly understandable, and you attempt a complex opening with “with the growing number of people” and a relative clause beginning “which are provided in large cities.” However, the response relies mainly on simple sentence patterns, so it shows limited grammatical variety. There are also errors in sentence construction and article use: “mostly people prefer” needs a more natural placement of the adverb, and “the best solution … is to build tall apartment blocks instead of homes” compares apartment blocks with homes even though apartments are homes. Practise combining ideas with accurate subordinate clauses and use articles and comparisons carefully. Longer, well-controlled sentences would help you explain and support your position.
