The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrate a college cafe before it was renovated and after the developments were made.
Overall, the cafe before the renovation consisted of a Kitchen, serving area, staff dining rooms, tables and chairs, bin and toilets. In contrast to the cafe today, it has developed some new changes (take away food, coffee bar, hot meals, salad bar, barbecue and outdoor seating.)
However, the old cafe had a simplier layout as of the cafe has now. The cafe before redesigning had a staff dining rooms whereas, in the todays cafe it has a coffee bar and take away food area in that particular position. Kitchen before just served food and drink while now it only serves hot meals.
In contrast to the old design of the cafe, the cafe now has three new addition to its layout. Therefore, now it has salas bar, barbecue and outdoor seating right next to the barbecue area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast between the former staff dining rooms and the new takeaway and coffee-bar areas, and you mention several additions, including the salad bar and outdoor seating. The overview also recognises that the café has changed. However, some important features are only listed rather than clearly compared: for example, the kitchen counter now serves hot meals, and the former bin has become recycling bins. The description of the outdoor area is unclear, and the barbecue’s position is not accurately explained: it is beside the outdoor seating, to the south-west of the building. Develop the overview around the main changes and report these locations more precisely to make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing changes. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is weakened by repeated contrasts and connectors, particularly “In contrast” and “However,” which do not always express the relationship between the ideas clearly. The final paragraph repeats the additions already listed in the overview, while “Therefore” does not introduce a clear consequence. Some references are also difficult to follow, such as “that particular position” and “right next to the barbecue area.” Grouping changes by location—north wall, western wall, and southern exterior—and using clearer references would make the organisation more coherent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “renovated,” “serving area,” “staff dining rooms,” and “outdoor seating,” so the main subject is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary wording, such as “developments” and “layout.” However, several choices are inaccurate or awkward: “simplier” is misspelled, “three new addition” has an incorrect form, and “salas bar” is misspelled. “Kitchen” is unnecessarily capitalised, and “the cafe has developed some new changes” is not a natural collocation. Use precise labels from the plan and check spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more accurate while retaining the adequate range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison with “whereas,” and most of the meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. For example, “as of the cafe has now” is an incorrect comparison structure, and “the todays cafe” has faulty article and possessive use. In “the cafe before redesigning had a staff dining rooms,” the noun phrase has a number mismatch; “three new addition” also needs a plural form. The sentence beginning “Therefore” is not clearly connected grammatically to the preceding point. Practise accurate comparison patterns such as “whereas the current café has…” and check articles, agreement and plural endings when editing.
