Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plan given below shows a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now. Some areas like the kitchen, the toilets, and the area for the tables and chairs are located in the same place as before. The serving area has been replaced by an area for hot meals, and instead of 1 bin there are now 2-3 recycling bins. Staff dining rooms have been redesigned and made into take away food room and a coffee bar. A salad bar has been made just outside the kitchen area, and 2 new gates have been made leading to the outdoor seating area. The outdoor seating area has a barbecue in the far left, and tables for the seating. We can clearly see that the cafe has been redesigned and expanded a little, also keeping the disposal of trash properly and making different rooms to make it convenient for the students to access their resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes accurately, including the kitchen and toilets remaining in place, the serving counter becoming a hot-meals area, and the former staff rooms being replaced by takeaway and coffee facilities. You also mention the new salad bar and outdoor seating. However, some key details are missing or imprecise: the plan shows two doors to the outdoor area, not “gates,” and the recycling bins’ number is not specified as “2–3.” The overview that the café was “expanded a little” is not clearly supported; instead, describe the major changes, especially the new outdoor seating and barbecue. The response is 144 words, below the 150-word minimum, and some features are less fully reported than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The information is presented in a generally understandable sequence, moving from unchanged areas to internal changes and then the outdoor additions. Linking phrases such as “instead of” and “and” help connect comparisons. However, the response is one continuous paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. Several changes are compressed into a long list, which makes the progression feel mechanical, and the final sentence shifts to a general claim about convenience and waste disposal rather than summarising the plan. Use a brief overview paragraph followed by a paragraph describing the interior and another for the exterior, with clearer references to the before-and-after layouts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for describing the plans, and terms such as “serving area,” “recycling bins,” “outdoor seating,” and “barbecue” communicate relevant features. You also attempt to describe change with phrases such as “has been replaced” and “redesigned.” Some choices are imprecise or informal for an IELTS report: “gates” does not accurately describe the two doors, “made into” is less suitable than a precise change verb, and “resources” is vague when referring to café facilities. “Expanded a little” is also an unsupported generalisation. Aim for more exact plan vocabulary and formal collocations, such as “converted into,” “added,” and “dining facilities,” while avoiding details not shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including present perfect passive constructions such as “has been replaced” and “have been redesigned,” and the meaning is generally clear. Some sentences combine many changes with repeated “and,” limiting control and making the structure less varied. There are also some grammatical issues: “made into take away food room and a coffee bar” needs clearer parallel structure and articles, while “the cafe has been redesigned and expanded a little, also keeping…” attaches the final phrase awkwardly. Try separating the changes into shorter, well-controlled sentences and use accurate articles and parallel forms, for example, “The staff dining rooms have been replaced by a takeaway area and a coffee bar.”
