Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks today.
Overall, many things have been changed now in college cafe. Before redesigning there was a large area that was covered with table and chairs, kitchen, serving area, staff dining rooms, bin, and toilets. After changes, many new things have been added like, hot meals, take away food, coffee bar, salad bar, outdoor seating, and barbecue.
If we talk about cafe before redesigning, there was an area occupied by kitchen. Next to the kitchen, serving area was located where all food and drink was available. The light blue area showed the customer area where tables and chairs were arranged. Staff dining rooms were located near it, where staff enjoyed their meals. In the right corner bottom, there were small area for toilets and bin was also kept near the toilets.
On the other hand, now cafe has been changed. Some things that has been never changed like kitchen, bin, tables and chairs and toilets. The area for hot meals has been constructed in place of serving area. Staff dining area is now replaced with take away food and coffee bar. There are a few things that has been added like salad bar at the west side. At the south west corner there is a barbecue area. Outdoor seating is also arranged near the barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main change from staff dining rooms to takeaway and coffee facilities, and your overview also notes the new salad bar, outdoor seating and barbecue. These are relevant features, and the comparison is generally accurate. However, some details are unclear or incomplete: you say the bin was near the toilets, whereas it was on the eastern wall, and you describe it as unchanged even though it became recycling bins. The new southern doors and the four outdoor tables are also omitted. The response therefore covers the task well overall, but some features are less fully reported and a few details need greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the former café and then the current layout. Phrases such as “On the other hand” help signal the comparison, and the reader can follow the main changes. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes list-like, and the repeated use of “there was” and “there are” makes the account feel mechanical. Some references are also unclear, such as “near it” after mentioning the customer area, and “Some things that has been never changed” does not clearly introduce the unchanged features. Grouping changes by location and using more precise linking and reference would make the description flow more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “serving area,” “staff dining rooms,” “take away food,” “salad bar” and “outdoor seating.” This allows you to describe the main facilities and changes. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices: “many things have been changed” is vague, “the light blue area showed” is not a useful way to describe the plan, and “constructed” is not the most natural verb for a new café facility. Repetition of “area” and “things” limits precision. Choose more specific verbs and nouns, such as “replaced,” “added,” “counter” and “facilities,” and use standard forms such as “café” and “takeaway” consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including “The area for hot meals has been constructed in place of serving area” and “Staff dining area is now replaced with take away food and coffee bar.” The overall meaning is usually understandable, but some errors recur in agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “many things … has been changed” should use a plural verb, while “there were small area” needs an article and plural agreement. “Some things that has been never changed” also has incorrect agreement and an awkward verb construction. Articles are missing in phrases such as “next to the kitchen, serving area” and “in place of serving area.” More careful editing of these patterns would improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
