Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the removal of staff dining rooms and the addition of outdoor seating. However, the report lacks precision in describing the spatial changes. For instance, stating the kitchen is 'at the top side' is vague, and the description of the serving area is slightly confusing. While the main features are identified, the comparison between the two layouts could be more analytical. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key changes are clearly contrasted and that the overview provides a more comprehensive summary of the transformation rather than just listing individual elements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'In addition'). Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the logical flow within paragraphs could be improved by better linking the 'before' and 'after' states. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of information feels slightly disjointed due to the limited variety of linking words used.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but contains several spelling errors, such as 'reesign', 'consutrated', 'raecycle', 'extanted', 'reveomed', 'expaded', 'plecae', 'setuiated', and 'surcuered'. These errors are frequent and occasionally make it difficult for the reader to identify the intended meaning. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'layout', 'redesigned', and 'outdoor seating', the high frequency of spelling mistakes significantly limits the range and accuracy. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling patterns and expanding the range of descriptive verbs used to explain changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'the layout of cafe' (missing article), 'how it looks like' (incorrect preposition usage), 'hot meals is introdued' (subject-verb agreement and spelling), and 'tables and chairs are on the center' (preposition error). While the meaning is generally understandable, the high density of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would greatly enhance the clarity of the writing.
