Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, identifying key changes such as the addition of the outdoor seating and the reconfiguration of the service counters. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the most significant changes, which is a requirement for a high band score in Task 1. While the student describes the 'before' and 'after' states, the comparison is somewhat mechanical and lacks a cohesive synthesis of the transformation. To improve, the student should include an introductory sentence that highlights the most notable changes, such as the expansion of seating and the diversification of food service areas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the previous layout to the current one. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on simple transitions like 'Moreover' and 'Additionally'. Some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'at the left top of the layout, facility of food and drinks counter was given'. The flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking words and ensuring that the relationship between the old and new layouts is more explicitly stated through comparative language.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the layout features clearly. However, there is a lack of precision and variety. Phrases like 'facility of toilets were given' and 'one dustbin was their' are awkward and demonstrate limited control over collocation and word choice. The student relies on basic descriptive language ('is provided', 'is included') rather than more precise terminology related to architectural or spatial descriptions. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include terms like 'relocated', 'transformed', 'partitioned', or 'designated' would significantly enhance the quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The layout demonstrates a university cafe previous it was reconstructed' (incorrect conjunction/preposition usage) and 'outdoor seating area is add' (incorrect verb form). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement, such as 'Facility of toilets were given'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and verb tense consistency would be beneficial.
