The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the plans, we can see the cafe before and after redesign. Today, the kitchen offers hot meals only, compared to the old serving area that had all food and drinks. Additionally, staff dining rooms were replaced by a food take away and a coffee bar. Moreover, a salad bar was introduced to the tables and chairs area, specifically on its left side. This makes things for the customers more organized as different food types are seperated. Furthermore, recycling bins (which are bigger in size) were used instead of the traditional bin, which is more eco-friendly. Nevertheless, toilets remained the same, still being located on the bottom-right of the cafe. Also, an outdoor seating place was added. It includes a barbecue on its left section. There are two doors which lead to the outdoor seating. One on the right next to the toilets, and another on the left near the salad bar.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, dining areas, and the addition of the outdoor space. However, the report lacks a clear overview or summary paragraph, which is essential for Task 1. The description of the changes is somewhat fragmented, and the comparison between the 'old serving area' and the new kitchen is slightly inaccurate based on the visual data provided. To improve, ensure you provide a clear introductory summary of the most significant changes and group related features together to provide a more cohesive analysis of the transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into a single block of text, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While some cohesive devices like 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used, they feel somewhat mechanical. The lack of paragraphing is a significant issue; a standard report should have an introduction, an overview, and at least one or two body paragraphs detailing the specific changes. Improving the structure by grouping information logically—such as internal changes versus external additions—would significantly enhance the flow and readability of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the changes described. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'eco-friendly' and 'redesigned'. However, there are minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'seperated' (separated) and 'food take away' (takeaway). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language related to spatial changes, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', 'expanded', or 'partitioned', rather than relying on basic verbs like 'used' or 'added'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'This makes things for the customers more organized' is slightly awkward, and 'a salad bar was introduced to the tables and chairs area' is not the most natural phrasing. There are also minor punctuation and prepositional errors. The control of grammar is sufficient for communication, but the lack of variety in complex structures and the presence of persistent minor errors limit the score. Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for small errors would be beneficial.
