Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram compares the J Woras college cafe before it was redesigned with how it looks after renovation.

Overall, there's a complete transformation in cafeteria, but some major enhancements are Outdoor cafe which plays a vital role in the charm of this place.

Before renovation there was only a simple kitchen where they serve all kinds of food and drinks, two staff dining rooms, tables and chairs which are of old version. There's also one toilet and a ordinary bin.

After redesign, the canteen of the college has been improved with a huge amount of key features, kitchen has been specified for only hot meals, drinks have a separate bar where students can purchase drink of their preference. Before construction, there is no take away area where online orders are fulfilled, tiny bins has been altered to Big Recycle bins. Two new specialities are also introduced which includes a separate Salad bar, and a barbecue corner which provides live cooking outside the dining area. Tables and chairs of new design are added.

One of the prime change is there's a Huge outdoor sitting option where students can sit and enjoy live barbecue if they wants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, including the addition of the outdoor area, the salad bar, and the barbecue corner. You have also made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the response lacks a clear, analytical overview that synthesizes the changes effectively. While you mention a 'complete transformation', you could improve by grouping features more logically (e.g., structural changes vs. service changes). Some descriptions are slightly repetitive, and the focus remains on listing features rather than providing a cohesive summary of the spatial changes. To reach a higher band, ensure your overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the expansion of seating capacity and the diversification of food service areas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression from the 'before' to the 'after' state. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., starting multiple sentences with 'Before' or 'After'). The transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother; for instance, the jump from the kitchen to the bins and then to the salad bar feels like a list rather than a flowing description. Improving the use of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in contrast' would help create a more professional and academic tone, enhancing the overall logical flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'renovation', 'enhancements', 'specified', and 'purchased'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'tables and chairs which are of old version' and 'tiny bins has been altered to Big Recycle bins'. The use of 'huge amount of key features' is also slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. Expanding your range to include more descriptive adjectives and nouns related to architectural or spatial changes would also be beneficial for achieving a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('tiny bins has been altered', 'if they wants') and tense inconsistencies ('kitchen has been specified', 'there is no take away area'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization and comma usage. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent when describing past states versus current ones. A more careful proofreading process would help eliminate these frequent, minor errors.
