The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans compare the layout of a college cafe before its redesigned with its current arrangement.
Before the redesign, the kitchen was situated in upper left corner, with serving area for all food and drinks directly in front of it. The center of the cafe was occupied by tables and chair, while two staff dining rooms were located in the middle-right section. The toilets were positioned in the bottom right corner, and bin was placed near the entrence on the right-hand side.
After the renovation, the kitchen remained unchanged, but the former serving area converted into hot meals counter. The staff dining rooms were replaced by separate takeaway food and coffee bar sections. In addition, a salad bar and barbecue area were added along the left side of the cafe. Furthermore, outdoor seating was created outside the builiding, and bin replaced with recycling bins. However, the central dining area and the toilets stayed in the original positions.
Overall, the cafe become more modern and coustomer-friendly. Several new food sevice areas have been added. While kitchen and toilets have remained in same locations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You have clearly contrasted the 'before' and 'after' states, highlighting key changes such as the new food service areas and the addition of outdoor seating. The overview is present and captures the essence of the transformation. To reach a higher band, ensure you avoid minor inaccuracies, such as stating the kitchen remained unchanged while the serving area was converted; a more precise description would clarify how the internal flow was modified. Overall, the information is well-selected and the comparison is effective.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, a description of the original layout, the changes made, and a summary. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Before the redesign', 'After the renovation', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' helps guide the reader through the information. However, the final paragraph is slightly fragmented, and the sentence 'While kitchen and toilets have remained in same locations' is a sentence fragment that lacks a main clause, which slightly disrupts the flow. Improving the connection between these final points would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the layout, such as 'situated', 'occupied', 'renovation', and 'recycling bins'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'entrence', 'builiding', 'coustomer', and 'sevice', which are noticeable. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'bin replaced with recycling bins' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, increasing the precision of your word choices and ensuring accurate spelling would elevate the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, including missing articles ('the kitchen was situated in [the] upper left corner', 'bin was placed' should be 'a bin was placed') and verb tense inconsistencies ('the cafe become' should be 'the cafe has become'). The final paragraph contains a sentence fragment, which impacts the grammatical accuracy. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will lead to significant improvement.
