Student answer (Band 6.5)

The illustration shows the variations in the cafe of a college before and after undergoing renovations.

Overall, it can be seen that the refurnished building of cafe looks more bold and unique than it was before with several additional things inside and outside including the Salad bar, outdoor seating, and Barbecue.

Starting with kitchen, that is on the same place but serving area of food and drinks has now been transformed to Hot meals. There were two dining sections for staff which are now being used for two different purposes. The left section of the dining rooms is now a place where you can collect your takeaway orders and the right section is a Coffee Bar. The tables and chairs are on the same place as they were before. A major highlight is the rectangular Salad Bar in front of the Kitchen. The toilets are at the same position, but a very nice change is that there was a single Bin before but several Recycling Bins are now introduced in order to avoid pollution. There are some developments outside the cafe as well that includes the Barbecue stall and the outside sitting. Families can enjoy the Barbecue and fresh air by sitting on these benches. Since the food points are now increased, so keeping the convenience of the customers in mind there is an additional entrance to the cafe right next to the toilets and exit is right next to the barbecue bar. The North-East entrance and exit are at the same place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the cafe redesign, including the kitchen, dining areas, and new external additions. You successfully identified the main changes, such as the introduction of the salad bar and the repurposing of the dining sections. However, the report could be improved by providing a more structured comparison between the 'before' and 'after' states. While you mention the kitchen remains in the same place, more precise spatial language (e.g., 'relocated to the west') would enhance the clarity of the report. Overall, the information is accurate and addresses the prompt well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and a detailed body paragraph. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from internal changes to external developments. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by splitting the long second body paragraph into two distinct sections—one for internal changes and one for external additions. This would make the information easier to digest. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences feel slightly abrupt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the changes, using terms like 'renovations', 'repurposed', and 'developments'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'refurnished building of cafe looks more bold' and 'keeping the convenience of the customers in mind'. These do not impede communication, but they lack the precision expected at higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing like 'very nice change'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'that is on the same place' (should be 'in the same place') and 'the tables and chairs are on the same place' (should be 'in the same position'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent understanding, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy would help raise your score.
