The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The plans illustrate a redesign of the university cafe to introduce a new seating area along with the introduction of a new section to serve coffee and salad.
Overall, over the period the cafe has completely transformed to include outdoor seating, takeaways meals and a salad bar.
Earlier, the cafe served all foods and drinks in a designated area located in front of the kitchen. That area has been transformed to a Hot meal section. The Staff dining rooms are being repurposed into two sections - Take away food and Coffee bar- following the same old entrance. Another major change is replacing bins with the recycling ones.
At present, outdoor seating is introduced with multiple chairs and tables to accommodate maximum people. Nearby the outdoor seating, there is a new Barbecue section. Additionally a salad bar is set up for the people. However, the chairs, tables and toilets remain at the same position.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the new outdoor seating, the salad bar, and the repurposing of the staff dining area. You provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all descriptions are precise. For instance, you mentioned a 'Barbecue section' near the outdoor seating, which is a specific detail that helps demonstrate a thorough understanding of the visual data. The response covers all parts of the task well, providing a logical summary of the changes observed in the plans.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that detail the changes. You use transition words like 'Overall,' 'Earlier,' 'At present,' and 'Additionally' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general summary from the specific details. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing of locations is clear, allowing the reader to follow the spatial changes described in the plans effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'repurposed,' 'transformed,' and 'accommodate.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'takeaways meals' (should be 'takeaway meals') and 'recycling ones' (which is slightly informal). While you successfully convey the meaning, incorporating more precise academic vocabulary related to spatial changes or architectural features would elevate your score. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the information clearly without any significant ambiguity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'transformed to a Hot meal section' (should be 'transformed into') and 'accommodate maximum people' (which is slightly unnatural; 'accommodate a larger number of people' would be better). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on preposition usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement in more complex sentences. The majority of your sentences are clear and functional.
