Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the cafe redesign, such as the replacement of the staff dining area and the addition of the salad bar and outdoor seating. However, the overview is somewhat disjointed and lacks a clear summary of the most significant changes. While the task is addressed, the description of locations is occasionally confusing, such as 'new salad bar just bottom to kitchen'. To improve, ensure that the overview provides a more cohesive summary of the overall transformation rather than just listing individual changes. The report is accurate in its identification of the key features, but the presentation could be more analytical.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'In outdoor planned as' and 'In north-east direction'. The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of smooth transitions between sentences. While the paragraphing is logical, the internal cohesion within paragraphs needs more variety and precision to guide the reader effectively through the comparison of the two plans.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the changes to the cafe. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'Recycleing' and 'previoursly', and some word choice issues, such as 'staff dinning rooms' (dining) and 'entrence' (entrance). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to spatial descriptions and architectural changes, while also ensuring accurate spelling of common terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The plans illustrates comparision' (subject-verb agreement), 'Bin are upgraded' (pluralisation), and 'toilets was in same place' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
