Student answer (Band 7.0)

Two maps provide detailed information about a college café section arrangement. The charts display how the café changed after being redesigned.

Overall, it is clear that the café underwent major changes with the creation of new spaces and the removing of others.

In fact, before the redesign, the college café was restricted to only indoor places. That is no longer the case today as numerous outdoor seating along with a large barbacue have been installed. Aditionally, just before the exit door to the outerspace a salad bar has been introdused. Aditionally, other changes could be observed. For instance, the previously staff dining rooms that have been present at the north of the large main room have been replaced with take away food sections. The same happened to the food and drinks serving area which got transformed to the hot meals space. Moreover, a salad bar has been introdused at the opposite of the recycling bins which were before a single bin. However, despite the various changes, some places have stayed as they were in the original design. The kitchen, the toilets, the tables and chairs are good example of that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully identifies the main features of the redesign, such as the addition of outdoor seating, the barbecue, and the conversion of internal spaces. You have provided a clear overview and made relevant comparisons between the 'before' and 'after' states. However, the description of the salad bar is slightly confusing, as you mention it twice in different locations, which creates a slight inaccuracy regarding the spatial layout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the reporting of spatial changes is precise and consistent with the visual data provided. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear summary of the key transformations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In fact', 'Moreover', and 'However' to link ideas. However, the use of 'Aditionally' (misspelled) and the transition between sentences can feel slightly mechanical at times. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details. To improve, focus on varying your cohesive devices and ensuring that the flow between sentences is smoother, rather than relying on a list-like structure for the changes observed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redesigned', 'arrangement', and 'transformed'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'barbacue' (barbecue), 'outerspace' (outdoor area), and 'introdused' (introduced). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise descriptive language regarding the layout changes and ensure careful proofreading of common vocabulary to avoid simple spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the previously staff dining rooms that have been present' (should be 'the former staff dining rooms') and 'at the opposite of the recycling bins' (should be 'opposite the recycling bins'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure occasionally feels slightly awkward. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
