Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagrams depict a college canteen before it was reconstructed and how it looks today.

Overall, the size of the cafeteria is increased now. Outdoor seating and barbecue is added outside the café. Few things are same in both the plans. Such as location of the toilets, entrance door, tables, chairs, and the kitchen. In inside, there are few additions. For instance, salad bar, two doors leading to the outdoor seating.

In past, there was a serving area inside the kitchen of the café, which is now converted into hot meals section. Meanwhile, staff dinning rooms are converted into take away food and coffee bar. Additionally, Salad bar is constructed in front of the kitchen while recycling bins are converted to the small bin.

Furthermore, outdoor seating is present now along with the barbecue. Two new doors are made for accessing the outdoor seating. Moreover, size of the toilets and the kitchen are same in both plans of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response provides a clear overview and identifies the main features of the cafe redesign. You successfully highlighted the key changes, such as the addition of the outdoor seating and the conversion of the serving area. However, the report lacks a more analytical approach to the comparisons. For instance, while you mention the size of the cafe increased, you could have been more specific about how the layout was reconfigured to accommodate the new features. The description of the kitchen and toilet areas remaining the same is accurate, but the report would benefit from a more cohesive synthesis of the changes rather than listing them in separate paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific areas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In past', 'Meanwhile', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'In inside' or 'In past'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the cafe. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between sentences feels more fluid rather than a list of observations.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconstructed', 'converted', and 'accessing'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'staff dinning rooms' (should be 'dining') and 'small bin' (which is vague). Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage, such as 'In inside' and 'In past'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on more precise terminology for describing spatial changes and ensure correct spelling of common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly regarding articles ('the' before 'salad bar', 'the' before 'outdoor seating') and subject-verb agreement ('size of the toilets and the kitchen are same'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'Few things are same in both the plans'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors indicates a need for more careful proofreading. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy would help improve your score in this criterion.
